Yes. Yes you are. Truly.

Ever see what heartworms do to an animal's heart? Your dog has been completely susceptible to having his heart filled and eaten by what looks like a mass of long spaghetti. If infected immediately after your lapse 2 months ago then the parasite is already in it's 2nd cycle.

Spare me the guilt trip. I think I have spoken to more people that don't vac or treat recently than others. Are they all truly irresponsible even though some of them have had generations of dogs live long healthy lives?

Again, I was never advocating for one side of the other. But you people that act like it's an end all, be all are ridiculous

We've got two dogs both on heartworm preventive since birth. Yellow lab has heartworms. Vet thinks she may have been underdosed when her weight /size increased significantly around 1 year of age.

Already spent $500 on the first arsenic injection and go back next Tuesday for two more shots which will be another $500ish. Worst part is keeping her from getting her heart rate up during the 8 week treatment. We're supposed to keep her kenneled the entire 8 weeks. Pic below... 5 more weeks to go. We do let her out of kennel more than we should, but we keep Watch over her to make sure she doesn't run.

Very sorry to hear that mate. Definitely going to start the heartworm again immediately. I hope your pooch gets better

Check online for free/nearly free vaccination clinics in your area if you're worried about the cost. Since your dog is 2, he can probably get a 3 year Rabies shot and a 3 year DHPP shot.

If he interacts with other dogs, he should get the canine flu/kennel cough vaccines

And get him on a monthly heartworm med ASAP

Thats fine and thats their choice. They can also drive around town all day speeding with their child unbuckled and be fine. But that one time they get in a wreck, they wont forget it.

Just bc you get away with things doesnt mean you are responsible.

Ignorance at its finest - OT always good for a laugh.

----

OP - Vaccines are a good idea. Rabies is required by law and it (and most of the others) can be administered every 3 years in most states. I tend to stop vaccinating my house dogs for anything but rabies after they've reached middle to older age. This is just my preference and not a recommendation. I keep up vaccines in hunting/sporting dogs b/c the exposure is much greater. I don't administer vaccines with what I do but I don't think vets make much money off them at all.

Any dog in the south should be on heartworm preventative throughout the year - not doing so is asking for trouble.

I'm not worried about the cost. My work schedule makes it hard to get him there. I had him scheduled on two separate occasions to get all the vacs and heartworm recently, and I missed both due to work

I have a hard time equating vaccinating dogs with endangering the life of a child...

Why do people even have pets if they aren't gonna be a responsible pet owner??

The owner of the vet office makes a killing.

I normally just board them for they day when they need to go to the vet. Drop them off once they open. Pick them up when I am off of work. Additional 8-10 bucks but worth it. A lot of places will also do after hours pickups if you ask.

Great response Nino. I think something along the lines of what you said is where I will hang my hat. Rabies, and heartworm. My dog will never be boarded cuz screw that shite

My wife is a vet, she does the same with our inside dogs.

Where did you get that kennel? Looks nice

Good luck with the pup. My FIL's dog had heartworms and was going through the injections. The vet didn't mention that he shouldn't be walked for that 8 week span. Unfortunately the dog passed shortly thereafter.

My wife was an office manager for one and handled all of the financials before they were sent to the accountant. No, this owner did not make a killing. In fact, she had another job to supplement income and regretted becoming a vet due to the lack of money it offered.

Her uncle is also a vet practice owner who also does not make a "killing", in fact he does not charge for a shite ton of stuff he should.

Both own small private clinics. The majority of the revenue goes back in to equipment and stocking medications/vaccines.
