yea I mean I would be for it, but I have a Mother in law that is live in and is a teacher so it wouldnt change childcare for us. Mine are in private too so might would not affect us at all. Would be a huge concern of mine if not. Childcare is already a pain in the arse for many working parents.
Mine are in travel ball and this really wouldnt affect much. You miss maybe 2 days out of school for the world series only, maybe 1 for the state tournament....its not much. fricking parents exagerate all that shite so so much. The reason it looks like it is so much more is because the parents go to the places 3-4 days in advance "to prepare". Really just an excuse for most to get off work and relax. Nothing wrong with it but they make it seem like it is so much. IN louisiana 95% of travel teams are doing maybe 2...maybe 3 tournaments a year max outside of driving distance. Only teams that are doing more than that, especially at the younger ages, are the majors teams and some very high AAA teams. Same parents that exagerate this are the same ones that exagerate the cost and about how good little Braxton is.
Vacations at different times would be nice as I am sure most states will not have this so you could hit up places like Disney or even 30A is times where its not stupid crowded. Also more time to hit the slopes other than at mardi gras. Would be awesome for that.
Biggest thing for me would be even if performance doesnt improve, it keeps the kids on a schedule and honestly for older kids would keep a lot of them busy to where I could see a lot less of them getting in trouble, getting into drugs etc.
From a kids point of view....I would be like frick this lol.

While that could help improve the academic ranking of the state (sure can't hurt), I'm afraid nothing would change except more bitching from teachers about their job. Also, this gives the "woke" crowd more indoctrination time.
So you didn’t read the details then?

work for a school district in mississippi. We are almost to this point of "year round" and its going to be AMAZING

Most teachers got into teaching for the summers off so they could day drink before having kids. If they did 2 week breaks they’d have to plan some during that time which would make them feel like they are working year round like the rest of us. So I’m sure they’re against it.

just increase then babysitting day....err, i mean school day, from 7:00 - 5:00
and give a longer summer
and give a longer summer

Massive pay raises for the astute teachers too.

ut if we take away the only reason anyone would ever even consider being a teacher, it'll be fine....
If a person is only considering being a teacher because they get summers off, then that person is a shitty teacher.
Teachers are some of the whinest, laziest people I know. And I can say that because I was one.

Guarantee that's a shitty school with a shitty principal.

Basically 2 months of school then 2 week break year round vs long summer. Same # of school days.
Nah, more like 4-6 weeks of actual school. You’re not taking into consideration those extra days the cancel classes cause of a thunderstorm.

I’d imagine the students who have the biggest issues with knowledge retention would be the same ones who don’t perform well now in the current system. If what’s learned at school isn’t being reinforced at home the problem won’t go away. Seems like a nanny state intervention for poor parenting with school work.

Didn't read the whole thread, but I assume private schools can tell them to kick rocks.

Government school kids aren’t really learning much anyway.
They learn what they want to learn. Effective instruction is taking place.

They’ve shortened summers already. As a kid I got out just before Memorial Day and went back right after Labor Day. This would just be a continuation of the current trend. If you going in that direction anyway, let’s just do it already.
That’s because in addition to the traditional Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter breaks, our district now has a week-long fall break in early October, MLK day, President’s Day with an extra day or two to make it a mini winter break, and a full week of spring break. Easter break used to be a week and that was the “spring break.”
A parish close to me switched to year-round (or balanced) this school year. I saw their schedule and it really didn’t look much different except for just a four-week summer break.

My kids will be off 11 weeks this summer. I just looked it up. The 11th of those weeks, is teacher development week (so the teachers work and get paid for those weeks).
Here is what I would do...
2 week break after the first, second, and third quarters (6 weeks total)
4 week break in the summer after the fourth quarter (4 weeks)
Take that 11th week - the teacher development week - and break it up so it's a day before/after each quarter so their development time is spread throughout the year.
Our entire educational calendar concept - both the months they attend, and the hours each day they attend - is based on a farming society which no longer exists for most people.
Life will adjust. Camps etc will pop up to fill in those two week periods. People will take vacation during those periods instead of during the summer (I'm big time looking forward to being able to do this with my kids, if this happens). You still have a bit longer "summer".
The teachers unions should not be upset as it still is the same number of days working. In fact, I think a lot of teachers will enjoy getting those two week breaks. The comment about summer jobs is stupid. Most of those jobs are summer camps and again, that will adjust to those break periods. Lots of teenagers these days work during the school year, too.

Of course.
Whether they do or not, is another story.

I think the Chinese do year round school like in the OP.
I believe the Australians have a year-round schedule, with their longer summer break starting at Christmas.

Yes, private schools can tell them to kick rocks but keep in mind that most catholic schools rely on public school transportation. while they pay a fee to the local district for using the buses, they would not be able to just up and create a transportation system for the catholic schools. With this in mind, I can't see how the Catholic schools wouldn't have to adjust their schedules to be similar to the public schools just due to the transporation issue.

Was going to post this, but I didn't know how many catholic schools still used public school bus transportation. It was a big thing when I was a kid but didn't know if it changed.

True, but they had to create a transportation system with Covid as none of the buses were running.
