Curious to everyone’s thoughts on this?

Basically 2 months of school then 2 week break year round vs long summer. Same # of school days.

As a parent I actually think this would be great, could vacation outside of summer. I do think a bunch of 2 week breaks makes more sense than an entire summer off. I’m sure summer camps would adjust to the open weeks etc. Of course the teachers unions are against it which in my mind makes me think we should do it.

Legislations allows for district wide pilot projects that are voluntary.

Advocate Article

quote:

"What we know is that there is summer learning loss, we know that it is real," Brumley told the House Education Committee. He said students can forget up to 30% of what they learned in their previous grade. "I am not here to tell you that a balanced calendar is a cure all," Brumley told lawmakers. "But given where we are in outcomes we should be exploring all options that make a difference in the lives of our students and teachers."

quote:

Cynthia Posey, director of legislative and political affairs for the LFT, noted that some students rely on summer months to earn money for college or to buy a car. Some teachers have second jobs when schools are closed. Posey said the bill is "changing something that people in a sense have always planned their lives" around, meaning the nine-month school calendar.

quote:

Students attend classes for 42 or 43 days, followed by two-week breaks. Those who need extra help can get it during the breaks – called intercessions – and others can get enriched learning.

quote:

"We work with a system to set up a calendar that makes sense for them," he told the committee. Rep. Patrick Jefferson, D-Homer, a member of the committee, praised the proposal. "This is how we help our children," Jefferson said. "This is good. This is really good." State law requires students to get a certain number of minutes of instruction per day, and 172 days of instruction per school year. But there is latitude in exactly how those days are allocated.

Just gonna be longer breaks throughout the whole year.

The students aren’t gonna go to school like they are working.

So, just more free lunches, and no learning, just screw our future

Get ready for a bunch of yankee transplants to raise hell saying that’s not how they grew up and starting groups called “Take Back Our Summer”. You’ll also get pushback from tourism groups complaining about not having enough summer help. We have a balanced calendar in our district which means we start in early August and end around June first and these two groups popped up and tried to get it pushed back to the traditional schedule.

The school year is set to end on June 30, then resume on Aug. 11 after a roughly five-week break.

So will teachers be expected to work during the breaks and provide the instruction "intercessions" or would it be voluntary?

I can see where that would be an issue if there is no change in salary and teachers no longer have traditional time off but no increase in PTO.

Kids are in private school, doesn’t apply to me but with 2 parents working, finding childcare for 2 weeks at a time sounds pretty hard when there are plenty of camps available for a summer

They’ve shortened summers already. As a kid I got out just before Memorial Day and went back right after Labor Day. This would just be a continuation of the current trend. If you going in that direction anyway, let’s just do it already.

Only thing I don’t like is that summer time is good for those of the age to learn to work, get their first job, etc. I think that is important for kids in high school. Otherwise, seems it would just be an adjustment.

We can’t agree on how to teach kids math in Louisiana and we’re going to go to this? Give me a break.

If this was done district wide then I have no doubt that plenty summer camp options would shift to covering these 2 weeks gaps. It would be a big shift, but I don’t see this being any more of an issue than it is now.

Private school part would be interesting...curios if they would eventually follow the same schedule after a couple years of all public schools doing this.

We also didn’t get a week for thanksgiving, a week for Easter, a week for Mardi Gras, and two weeks for Christmas.

I think the Chinese do year round school like in the OP.

I’d be for this

Mostly because teachers unions are against it so that means it’s probably good for the kids

And I could vacation more

I’m curious how the salary structure of teachers would be affected.

Teacher contracts are convoluted in some parishes.

While that could help improve the academic ranking of the state (sure can't hurt), I'm afraid nothing would change except more bitching from teachers about their job. Also, this gives the "woke" crowd more indoctrination time.

Just leave it as it is.

Not sure about contracts but it shouldn’t affect the number of days they work.
