Another one today. Both were black bears

You obviously cut them bad enough so you can out run them.

A warning shot would have been fired I can tell you that. Way to close for comfort.

Well the dumbass should have been running or climbing something instead of texting. The last thing I'd be thinking of at that point would be to text anyone, including my mom.

Ok who is going to make the racist comment that gets them banned??

On a serious note, I didn't know they had black bears in Alaska....are they in the Southern part?

Black and grizzly are both in most area of alaska.

There are black in ozarks, mississippi by the river and two areas of Louisiana,by the river and se swamp. Basically where no one builds shopping malls.

Why don't you just shoot the bear?

Bears are avid tree climbers. They are also much faster over short distances.

Standing your ground in a tight group and creating a lot of noise can sometimes make a bear think twice.

If you're on your own, the only thing I can really think of would be to try and keep large trees between you and the bear. Give it an obstacle course to get to you.

General consensus among the avid outdoorsmen I am friends with is that most black bears will be able to climb any tree you can (older bears may struggle a little) and most adult browns are to large to climb but are large enough to essentially knock down any tree you could quickly climb.

Don't know how accurate, but that was the general consensus, along with the fact that they will likely just out wait you.

I might not be able to answer the question "does a bear shite in the woods." But that damn bear would most definitely be able to answer the bear question, "does a man shite his pants?"

Grizzly bears can run 35 mph. If you run you are screwed.

I would have my sidearm out, because I would never hike/backpack in grizzly country without it.

We saw a black bear in Tennessee near the NC state line hiking a few years ago. It seemed pretty timid. I had a 45 on me but I didn't want to shoot it. It probably would have just pissed him off anyway. I'm glad he just walked off.

Serious answer.....

Black bear - you're supposed to stand your ground and appear as big as possible (arms above your head, making noise). If it's cornered you're probably still in trouble.

Brown bear (including grizzly and Kodiak) - you're supposed to ball up on the ground and cover your head and hope it only swats at you a few times and decides you aren't a threat.

Polar bear - you're screwed unless you have a huge rifle. They will stalk and kill people.
