Thanks for the lessons everyone, interesting stuff

And the numbers don't lie, the ETO was a meat grinder on a scale that dwarfed the Pacific.
The Italian theatre was quite the meat grinder.

I spoke to more then on vet from the war (sadly there are too few left) most of them in europe wanted to be in the pacific and most in the pacific wanted europe.
Grass is always greener ;-).
my grandfather was a foot soldier in europe and my great uncle was a B-24 pilot. Both wanted to change places

Europe for sure, the Japs were nutters, still I reckon Africa would have been better, least Rommel had some integrity.

The guy I knew with the coolest story was a former OSS man who hunted Nazi agents In S America. He said their main adversary was the FBI, which also claimed responsibility for counterintelligence.

After the battle of Guadalcanal, the Marines got dumped in Australia and them women down under threw it all over them boys!
My paw paw (3rd Division) went to New Zealand for R&R after Guam. I was just talking to my dad yesterday and seeing if his dad told him much about his experience. He said as he got older he told some more. My grandfather said it was awful and that he had to kill or be killed. They wouldn't quit. "And if it wasn't the Japs, then it would be some sort of disease that would get you..." Crazy times.
He was in a newspaper write up for taking out a whole bunch of Japs. My dad still has the flag and sword from a Japanese soldier my grandfather killed. I got the flag cleaned up and sealed at the WW2 Museum for my dad years ago for his birthday.
Both of my grandfathers fought in the Pacific. Other one was in the Navy. You choose Europe every time over Pacific.

Pacific. I'd rather sweat my arse off and pop japs by the dozen than freeze my arse off while panzer divisions try to kill me.
Watch Chosin. You freeze in the Pacific too. Marines were outnumbered but Chinese soldiers were in bad shape weapons and clothes-wise. Great documentary.
The battle of Okinawa was hell to see what they did, too.
ETA: Chosin was after WW2 but we did go to war with North Korea not that long after.

Hell, like Darth and the rest, I have been a student of this for most of my life and have learned a few things!

aneywhere but the eastern front.
If we are talking strictly as an Ameracin then I would prefer Europe. At least you would occasionally get fed great meals and raid wine cellars.

No doubt. I have been trying to find the old wartime documentaries like Ford's Battle of Midway - specifically the one's made during the war. Have you seen any/know where they can be found?

Afraid I can't help you. At least not with anything you haven't already seen. When I was a kid I was a huge WWII buff. Had seen every doc and movie made and made models of probably every American aircraft used during the war. Then life happened. This thread has re sparked my interest though. Might have to get back into it.

No doubt. In my novice opinion, and I may be pointing out the obvious, but I'd rather be in the Pacific than on one of those first waves at Omaha.

As a kid, I was really into the air war aspect of it (due to my Grandfather's experiences) and could tell you everything about almost every plane used. I also built models and as you said, life happened. I got back into and started building again - and now I do it with my son who absolutely loves it. Now he is becoming a plane nut.
