Basically its a woman in which your wife can unload all her stress, emotions, drama that come along with birthing a child. The duala has empathy, provides that female emotional support, and goes and gets the nurse/finds out information. It severely reduces the drama from the mother.
I said the same thing as you with my second child. She told me she hired one and I was like what the hell is this hippie shite? It was awesome and peaceful. Night and day compared to the craziness with the first child. She stayed there all day and I did not get any nagging. It was now OK for me to go home at night instead of sleeping in that joke of a bed they provide for the husband (if they even do), and I could go out to lunch and come back without the wife flipping her shite that she can't me alone in a hospital bed for 45 minutes.
I am sure they are more widespread with natural births.

There is also Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) that do natural births in a hospital setting. They have a collaborative practice with an OBGYN in La in case the patient risks out of their care. It is a masters program. They have normal OB clinic in the office and do natural births in the hospital. Basically a PA degree for women’s health with a functional medicine focus

Dumb arse crystal hippie women who think they’re OB/GYNs. Had one in almost kill my wife and our first kid. Should be illegal. Avoid.

I’m wondering how many women on MedicaRe need them.

You went home the night your child was born? Wow

Hiring a doula has become popular. The idea is to support the anxious mother-to-be who finds the medical world too impersonal... which it definitely can be. The duola is basically a coach through late pregnancy, labor, birth, nursing and earliest childcare. My son tells me hiring one saved him much stress. It also reduces mother/daughter hostility which can peak when a baby comes. The idea is fine but standards and quality assurance are currently weak at best.
The strange part is that doula is a Greek word meaning female slave. Who would want a job appropriate for a slave?

I’ve always heard them called a midwife, is that different?
Different,…. Midwives are medically trained and licensed
Doulas are granola chicks that are not medically trained but offer emotional support.

They serve as an advocate for the mother during birth. They offer help such as suggesting ways to help the mom get more comfortable and have an easier labor

If I went home to sleep and left my wife in the hospital with another woman they would have divorce papers drawed up by the time I returned.

Doulas aren’t always paid; any woman who has given birth and is willing can do it. I was the doula for my brother and his wife both times she gave birth. I gave her emotional support, let him know what was normal and what wasn’t, and let her know what was going on at each stage of labor (I had given birth four times myself). I also stayed out of the way of the labor & delivery nurse and didn't give medical advice.
My sil was awesome; gave birth without medication both times. I also ran the video camera for them. It really isn’t a leftwing thing; I know plenty of conservative women who have been doulas or had doulas.

My ex-wife is a Labor and Delivery supervisor. She absolutely despises most of them. Some are basically just a birthing cheerleader. Some of the others will actually give their clients bad medical advice during childbirth when they have no medical training whatsoever.
