Why? I don't recall any of my professors requesting that they be called "Dr." They may have used that title when publishing, but they certainly didn't insist on being called that in the classroom setting. I did generally refer to most as "Professor" when addressing them, although there were a fair number that insisted on just calling them by their first names.

I don't know of any who "insisted" either because everyone just called them "Dr. Smith"

just kind of an understood respect thing

I was in science and engineering though, so maybe its different in other fields

Well plenty of LSU professors introduced themselves on the first day as Dr so and so, and that's how we'd address them unless they went with the "just call me (insert first name here)." I don't recall many being pretentious about it though. But I was in engineering. Most of my teachers were pretty laid back.

As someone who possesses a PhD, and worked in Academia for a decade, the author of this article is correct.

One of the main reasons I don't brag about it or discuss it is because I met so many STUPID people in Academia that had one, that it jaded me. No joke.

Fast forward 12 years later and now anyone can get a PhD for anything, and demand they are treated like they are a God, when in reality they can barely tie their own shoes.

In a Twitter post on Saturday, McCain appeared to agree with Northwestern that Epstein was being misogynistic with his article.

“I am so sick of the way accomplished, educated, successful women like @DrBiden are talked about in the media by misogynistic men,” McCain wrote. “BEYOND SO SICK OF IT.”

How can someone now have any disagreement on anything with any woman or person of color without being called racist or misogynistic? Would seriously like to know.

Could be. I don't have a problem with it in a professional setting, just talking about my own personal experience.

I'm getting two doctorates, and I've said specifically, with regards to only the relaxation of standards, that I don’t see this relaxation from my own perspective. Epstein doesn't explain what he means there, instead continuing his logorrhea with an idiotic aside about honorary doctorates, which is highly ironic. Maybe I would agree that doctorates are less prestigious, but I'm not taking issue with that specific part of the argument. Epstein's claim of a relaxation of standards is my specific issue, and it is a claim repeated often in different circles, without any clarity on what these people mean, or if there is any introspection on whether the claim is even possibly true. He doesn't offer evidence for the claim, instead relying on the reader's own experience, which I am.

Could he mean that people can get PhDs/Doctorates from "questionable" online and foreign universities?

there are plenty of things about Biden to complain about without resorting to snarky, jealous acquisitions about his wife (not an elected official) using a title that she rightly earned and is entitled to use. all it does is make the author, who holds a bachelor degree, look petty.

I've been the same route and couldn't agree more. Probably half the faculty at 3 universities that I am familiar with are just plain uneducated and don't have the brain power to survive in a real workplace. As an additional note, a doctorate in education is considered a D.Ed. Degree and not a real Ph.D.
Most states now require education degrees for secondary teachers of math, English, sciences, etc. This is ludicrous. You can float through the system with low math and science grades while doing well in the history of land grants, classroom management, and other foolishness and still teach math at the secondary level, and even at some colleges of education. An education degree is just a union card with no academic justification. This is a lot of the reason that test scores have gone down the toilet for the last 30 years, and I seen universities weakening rather than strengthening their requirements, particularly in quantitative fields. That is happening now in the University of Louisiana schools and cheapening their degrees. It is my belief that this will come crack to bite their graduates in the arse. At least one university in the state has virtually eliminated the quant requirements for management and marketing majors. How do you do marketing analysis, scheduling, or inventory without quant?

If someone is having a heart attack and asks for a doctor, they don’t mean a fricking loser like Jill Biden.

Shaq actually has a Honorary Doctorate degree from LSU. He should change his Twitter handle to Dr Shaq and demand everyone refer to him with his make believe Doctorate as Dr Shaq. If you disagree you are a racist, xenophobic, .....whatever other isms.

Am I doing this right?

Shaq actually has a earned D.Ed. same as Jill Biden.

“Toward the end of his playing career, he began work on an educational doctorate at Barry University. His doctoral capstonetopic was "The Duality of Humor and Aggression in Leadership Styles". O'Neal received his Ed.D. degree in Human Resource Development in 2012.O'Neal told a reporter for ABC News that he plans to further his education by attending law school.”

I, unfortunately, work with a pile of folks with PhDs from some pretty respectable universities, all in various engineering disciplines or chemistry / physics. Most will sign things a Dr. So and So...some are usually referred to as Doctor So and So....but very few insist on being called Dr. and the ones who do are invariably assholes who do not know their arse from a hole in the ground...does she insist on people calling her doctor or do people do it due to her holding a doctorate and out of respect??? If she insists on it, she is an arse.

I do not comply with the insistence by the way....I usually call everybody I interact with professionally as Mr. or Ms. as I was raised in the south and using first names was tacky unless you were addressing a friend or a family member...I also worked around the military a BUNCH and did this out of respect to their service....but if I ever called anyone Mr. SO and SO and they seriously said "Its DR SO and SO" I would IMMEDIATELY and forever more address them by their first name....I was seriously taken to task for this practice a couple of years ago with a DoE Doctor (nuclear engineering) and was encouraged to appease him by other consultants and the DoE site director....I did not and that guy eventually came around and wasn't near the prick he was initially....

Cool. He's still not referred to nor does he ask to be referred to as a Doctor....because that would be fricking silly.
