As a private University is there a problem with them selecting their students?

100%.
You havent been living in the real world if you were even slightly shocked by this scandal.

It seems that most of you forgot that the whole reason there are criminal charges is that a lot of this money was funneled through a "charitable organization" that would fraudulently make up shite about the kids and send it on to colleges along with hundred dollar handshakes for connected people on the inside. Many times, this person on the inside was a coach of some third tier sport who would have the kid admitted as a member of the sports team, at which point the kid would invariably have a devastating career ending injury. Some of those assholes were brazen enough to claimed the charitable donation on their taxes, so that's the tax fraud and money laundering going on. Also, the fraud was perpetrated through the mail, so mail fraud for everyone!
That's why there's a federal case against all those people, not because someone walked up to these universities with a bag of cash or bought a new building for their kid to get in. There's nothing illegal about that, as far as I know. It definitely isn't a good look for the university, though, to have these internal emails baldly talking about how money can buy your way in.
All those people who didn't take the deal the feds were offering when this first came out:

I don't get it. What are the last 15 seconds for?

Did people not read the article?
This was more than just about who had money, it was about faked credentials and unqualified applicants.
Kinda surprised a lot of people have no issues with it.

That university is garbage. Gonna plummet in the USNWR rankings next year.

There are so many schools that take donations for admissions. State schools probably veer away from this kinda thing. Private institutions can probably sweep these kind of donations under other umbrellas.

Well, yeah, I would think that would matter to an alum.
Shoot, just go to Concordia.

And OP, you don't need to say USCw. No one thinks of the gamecocks when they see USC.
I got a PM from a mod a year ago saying I need to put w after USC to clarify which school I am referring to.
Guess some cock fan complained

Depends on who your family rubs elbows with.

Article is behind a paywall, but:
Mr. Singer has admitted to running a $25 million scheme in which parents allegedly gave money to his bogus charity, with the agreement Mr. Singer would then pay coaches or their athletic programs to designate his clients’ children as athletic recruits, regardless of athletic ability. In some instances, parents went so far as to help Mr. Singer fabricate athletic profiles for their teens, according to charging documents and court testimony.
This is why it is a problem for USC.

Yes, that is a problem but USC is suing saying they are an injured party. These new emails would negate that stance by saying USC has always allowed students in for money so what's the difference? It just went through a different channel.
Although we all know, Singer and his crooked buddies all kept the cash and didn't give it to the school.
