re: WSJ: LSU's Lazy River and the Student-Fee Sham

What a waste of space. They could have made a bad arse pool. Instead a damn ugly lazy river? There are two small spots for the chairs that lay in the water. That is a lot of unused concrete.
Vote: Would you rather have more hot chicks laying in the pool or a lazy river?
Verdict: LAZY RIVER!

All bout the rental houses down brightside and in LBP.
I don't know why more people don't do this. I lived in Beau Pre. Rent there was cheaper there than the off campus apartments.

It's a bit over the top. Something distasteful about it. And it will contribute to fee increases that raise the overall cost of education.
Just an FYI prior to this renovation LSU was essentially dead last in the SEC in regards to campus recreation. They had the worst facilities and even less to offer prospective students.
Some of y’all are acting like LSU is the only one in country doing this. They are simply trying to compete with other like schools and catch up to everyone else.
So many people bitch about LSU not being a good college. They try to improve it and you still bitch.

So maybe 5% of the student population in a single year voted to increase fees for all students forever? Seems fair.
This can be said about every election.
And the fees for the renovation/expansion are not being charged anymore. Just the annual membership.
Wise use? Nah, but it wasn’t like the administration shoved it down their throats.

Where are you getting this forever stuff.
The fee increase term was clearly defined.

Would you rather have more hot chicks laying in the pool or a lazy river?
Vote: would you rather drink alcohol at the pool and play beer pong in the shallow end? Or would you rather float in a pool with no alcohol or beer pong?
Verdict- off campus pools are where the majority of students will continue to spend their "pool" time.

Agreed, but then what was the point?

As I stated earlier. Social media and the ever growing competition between students and their peers over who has the coolest shite at their school/apt/etc.
For zero other reason but for the 18 year old freshman to snapchat their friends in high school about how awesome all the campus life stuff at xyz school is.

Then I go back to my original point. A pool of tons of freshman chicks would move me more than a lazy river.
Either no one goes (or would rather off campus) which means there could have been much better use of the money. Or people (freshman) do go there and the design is horrible.

You aren't getting it. A pool isn't special. A pool doesn't make you different. Every school has a pool. A lazy river is different. It's unique. It's a talking point.
In the world of social media, more of the same gets looked over. Colleges and Apts have to differentiate themselves from each other in terms of social life. And the only way to do that is to waste money on niche things like a rock wall and a lazy river.

The rest of the world can suck it. LSU students, just like any body represented by government, have a right to place priorities on what they want, and to pay for it themselves. If someone doesn't like it... they are irrelevant to the situation.
Following your logic, LSU students can vote for this if they would like, but the state legislature can also recognize that a student body that votes for extravagant and wasteful spending that makes the university a national laughing stock is sufficiently wealthy to pay unsubsidized tuition. While LSU students are receiving subsidized tuition through TOPS, there should be no lazy rivers being built on LSU's campus.
Moreover, where are the fricking grown-up on LSU's campus? The incompetent leadership at LSU promoted this plan behind the scenes, and if they knew what they were doing they would realize how obscene this looks to those funding higher education in the state. The LSU administration is more concerned about shiny new toys than they are with the quality of education provided its students.

Yep, just like any political subdivision or municipality which generates its own revenues, but relies on the state or local government for its funding. If the funding source considers expenditure of those self-generated funds to be reckless, it cuts the appropriation made by the government by that amount.
Might as well experience the real world.

The new UREC is amazing. The lazy river is just an easy target. If the students voted for it they should get it.
The old rec was such a piece of shite too. The gym was built to handle a 1/4 of the student population.
The pool is still a waste of money because they aren’t going to let students drink 12 beers and piss in it like cottages would

I don't think it's ugly at all. In fact I think the whole thing looks great.

TxTiger being in high education is frightening.

While 100% of the student body has the priveledge of a vote? You sound like a Hillary supporter. "This country sucks, but I don't vote because it falls during my soaps..." love it

This...
It reminds me of high school student councils who can vote all day and night to get less homework assigned, then the adults in the room laugh and gently take those students to the side.
Where were the adults here? And by that I mean the ones responsible for LSU's financial well-being. Louisiana can't afford this.

So you're saying student fees only went up for a limited period of time? Link me to that, please.
It was in the original article

“a student government resolution, passed in 2011, authorized a $135 fee increase over three years to finance the project.”
