Would you wear a black suit to a black tie optional event?

I've always heard black suit is for funerals only but I've been reading that they're acceptable for black tie optional events in lieu of a tux. What does the OT think? I'd lean dark gray or dark blue before black, personally.

Depends on what your boyfriend is going to wear.

If it’s black tie optimal, go with the charcoal or navy suit. Don’t wear a black suit.

Black tie optional means you're supposed to wear a dark suit unless you're part of the reason for the event.

No it doesn’t.

This isn’t necessarily true. I went to a black tie optional wedding early this fall and only a handful of people actually wore black tie. Granted the wedding was at a ranch so I had a good sense that’d be the case, and confirmed with the coordinator, but sometimes it’s better to not go full tux in black tie optional situation.

ETA: I wore a navy suit and fit in just fine.

I wear black suits with bow ties to black tie events regularly. Don’t care and no one else does either

It means you can wear a tux or a dark suit. My question was specifically if a black suit was allowed, because I've read differing things.

I don't think it'd be a douche move to wear a suit depending on what the event is. If it's some acquaintance's event, probably a suit. A gala or close friend's wedding, you rent the tux.

They’re too polite to say anything. You still look like an idiot.

Wear a dark colored suit, but not black.

That'll put you far ahead of the myriad of black suits and black square toed shoes you'll see if you're in south Louisiana.

charcoal suit and black tie is fine. Black suits, IMO, are for funerals.

He's absolutely correct. You shouldn't be wearing black suits to work or weddings.

Is a black suit your go-to suit color or something?

Black suit in the evening is fine. Hell for an event with optional tux I've worn a white jacket with a black bow tie and tux pants.

Suit aside, how’s your business card game?

Just don’t let the collar of your red shirt flap outside of the jacket lapel. That look is no longer in.
