I'm not sure the last time I wore my black suit outside of the two funerals I've been to in the last two years.

If I'm going to something that has black tie anywhere in the description, I'm going in my tux. I'll take being slightly overdressed vs under.

A gala or close friend's wedding, you rent the tux.

Why don't you just buy a tux instead of spending $200-300 every time you need one? You can make your money back in 4 events.

Are you friends with anyone else that is going? Find out what they’re planning to wear.

At the club? I guess so. Nowhere else.

I considered going with my black suit for the last BTO wedding I had to go to, but discovered it fit like I was a part of the 2003 NBA draft class and just went with my tux

I agree that black suits are for funerals, but no one will care if you wear a black/dark suit. Most of the time BTO is used to "make sure the redneck cousins don't wear jeans" and most people are just wearing dark suits. I feel like if these are the type of people that would really care that you aren't in a tux, it wouldn't even be a question.

The black suit for funerals thing is only if it’s a crappy black suit like most black suits are. Because black suits are rarely worn. There are plenty of very nice black suits that can be worn for a Tux type of event.

Some BTO events are basically just the wedding party or VIPs in tux, some almost everyone is.

Cummerbunds are out of style. If you wear one with anything other than a tux it will look like a costume. I don't even wear them with my tux.

Look, everyone should own a good looking tuxedo, that doesn't look like a rental, that you can wear on a moment's notice. Drop the pleated tux shirt and the cummerbund. Just wear a high quality broad collared white shirt and a bow tie, any bow tie. Also, learn how to tie a bow tie. It's as easy as tying your shoes.

Are they? Any time I wear a tux I opt for the cummerbund instead of vest

I wear a black suit with a black tie to winter weddings and other formal events. It’s a good look and nobody will think anything of it.

I was always told black tie optional means dark suit if not tux.
Wear a nice dark suit, you'll be fine.

Some of y’all are so weird. It is about as basic of a look as I can think of for an evening winter wedding.

It looks absolutely fine notwithstanding the one or two dandy opinions like yours that may be in attendance
