I'm sure you can dress him just fine.

I bet.

If you are at a BTO event and the first thing that comes to mind is:
"I can't believe so and so wore a black suit, what is this a funeral?"

Then you have issues.

Bad attempt at mockery.

Because navy and charcoal suits are far more practical options for BTO. Wearing a black suit and a black long tie to BTO makes it seem like you don't understand that black tie is a tux. Why fly that close to the sun when it isn't necessary and a navy or charcoal suit would do just fine?

Well I suppose that I wasn’t necessarily thinking of an actual “BTO” dress code, but at a formal event I find the black suit is fine and see plenty of people wearing long ties with tuxes these days where I don’t really think the difference matters.

Of course the actual occasion matters but a wedding or celebration I will wear what I want and suffer the consequences.

Isn't that what the thread is about?

I don't disagree, but you are under the assumption that someone owns all of these. There are plenty of people that only own one or 2 suits, most actually. If they have a black suit and a summer suit, there's nothing wrong with black suit and nice tie to a BTO event.

We're discussing this as if you have options other than a black suit. If you have other options, you should probably stick with one of those.

Look, I'm not going to lose any sleep over a black suit vs a tux, but anecdotal experience says that person wearing a black suit instead of a tux simply doesn't understand the difference. I think most here would agree with that experience.

My point is that unless you want it to appear that you don't know the difference either, there is not need to fly that close to the sun. Wear another dark color or wear a tux.

How is that homophobic? You said that you didn't need help dressing your man, and I agreed.

Yeah it is. I still think my black suit looks better than the tux purchased in 1995 does.

Why don't you purchase a nice black tux too?

This has gotten out of hand. I concede your point that if a black tie is optional, to decline the option altogether and go with a dark suit, unless you have a tux you want to wear.

All I am saying is that a black suit can look fine in certain situations, and if a black tie were required you will likely look fine as long as everything fits.

Honestly, I would find someone doing this more clueless than someone wearing a black suit at a black tie optional event.

What is with some of you and your black suits? It's obviously a sore spot for many.

And that's kinda the point. A black suit should not be the first suit a man buys, so it shouldn't be the only option.

If Brad Pitt shows up to a BTO event in a black suit, you think people think its a fashion mistake? No, he probably looks great in it. Celebrities wear black suits all the time to award shows.
Brad Pitt can get away with a lot of things the average OTer cannot, what a horrible analogy

Is this true? It's been several years since I was a working at a law firm and had to wear a suit every day, but I swear I remember people wearing black suits to work in the corporate world
