Some of y’all are so weird. It is about as basic of a look as I can think of for an evening winter wedding.

It looks absolutely fine notwithstanding the one or two dandy opinions like yours that may be in attendance

Dandy? Yeah, because there's no middle ground between a bland, black suit that makes you look like you're attending a funeral or that you're a waiter, and some peacocking "dandy" outfit.

I honestly find guys like you to be the weird ones. So scared of displaying one iota of individuality or any sense that you may have a sense of fashion. Is it some fear of being perceived as gay or something?

Lol. You are being ridiculous to say there's a huge difference between a black tuxedo and a black suit. So black suit's are funeral only, but black tux is ritzy trend that makes you look incredible?

I agree, a $200 crappy looking black suit should not be worn outside of funerals. But a nice black suit, nothing wrong with it for some other limited applications.

Well, there is a huge difference. They're completely different items.

Ritzy trend?

I wear a black suit with a black tie to winter weddings and other formal events. It’s a good look and nobody will think anything of it.

I don't get too caught up in it, but it's an unnecessary look.

Wear a navy or charcoal suit or a black tux. It's pretty simple.

Yep, I’d say we got a dandy here.

If you must know, never did I say it was the only suit I wear to weddings, just one I wear on occasion, particularly if my wife is also wearing black.

And as far as individuality, I’m apparently going against the grain enough to get you out of sorts about my style so I’d say it’s at least somewhat adventurous.

Can you please explain how it is unnecessary

I have worn this combo three times that I can think of and at no time did I feel inappropriately dressed in the least.

To be honest, wearing a tux when it is not the required dress code can make you stand out a bit. “Oh are you in the wedding party sir?”
“No I’m just the only guy that isn’t but still wearing a tux I bought in the early 90s and I am getting my money out of it.”

You are certainly invested in this thread with strong opinions about men's clothes. Work in a men's department in a store maybe?

Yeah, when compared to you in your black suit, I'm a regular Beau Brummell.

Oh, you and your buds have strong opinions about clothes too. Don't kid yourselves. This thread is a testament to that.

Nope. Corporate attorney. What do you do? Regardless of occupation, I know that the way we present ourselves can convey quite a bit about us.

I bet if we show up to the same wedding and I wear a black suit and you wear your fanciest bow tie and hanky combo you have I will get more complements on my appearance than you do.

Fear the black suit

Bow tie and hanky combo? Says the guy who is trying to match his wife. Some of you poor slobs just have no clue, but you get so defensive when someone tries to point you in the right direction.

I just posted one thing in here and said you have options. I do not have strong opinions about what other guys wear. Like I said, I even wear a white dinner jacket as a replacement sometimes with a tux, not a big deal and I am usually not the only one.

Not sure what you're getting at with this. This is not some sort of subversive statement. It's a look that's been about for close to 100 years now, and if done right is a good look.

Because navy and charcoal suits are far more practical options for BTO. Wearing a black suit and a black long tie to BTO makes it seem like you don't understand that black tie is a tux. Why fly that close to the sun when it isn't necessary and a navy or charcoal suit would do just fine?

I don't disagree, but you are under the assumption that someone owns all of these. There are plenty of people that only own one or 2 suits, most actually. If they have a black suit and a summer suit, there's nothing wrong with black suit and nice tie to a BTO event.

Or worse yet, you are assuming that someone owns only 4-5 suits and doesn't have 20 like someone of high net worth.

If Brad Pitt shows up to a BTO event in a black suit, you think people think its a fashion mistake? No, he probably looks great in it. Celebrities wear black suits all the time to award shows.

There are ways to look crappy and ways to look good in almost every normal suit color.

Who is being defensive?

I do not need your help dressing my man. I am confident enough to wear a black suit and pull it off and don’t think twice about it.

If you are at a BTO event and the first thing that comes to mind is:
"I can't believe so and so wore a black suit, what is this a funeral?"

Then you have issues.
