re: would you stiff a server that gave you bad service, yet good food?

Up to you, I don't believe anyone is "owed" a tip, it is a reward for good service, I also do not hold the server accountable for the food either way.
While I am usually a generous tipper I have left 0 on occasion and will do so again in the future I am sure.

You received shitty service baw. No shame in leaving the server a less than 5% tip when they did not deserve it. Should of left them nothing.

I think you nailed it. The server is just bringing out what they were given. They can (and often do) question it before bringing it out (obviously you wouldn’t know if they did that unless you’re in the kitchen), but ultimately if they’re told by whoever is in charge to bring it out it’s their job to comply. If they give good service but give you subpar food, it usually isn’t their fault. There are exceptions, but that is usually not on them. Their attentiveness, courtesy, timeleyness and hustle to get you taken care of is their job. If they do a good job but the food is bad, tip the server and make sure they know it’s for them and not anyone else. If the food is good but the server was bad, then stiff, it’s a learning experience. These are usually young people who can be taught how to make more money by working the way they are supposed to.

I once found the service at the B-Dubs on Bluebonnet to be the worst I’ve had ever. This was late after a 7pm game in TS.
Not all that busy, server was more interested in dancing around at the bar with other wait staff. Took 10min to get refills, food came out insanely slow. Service was just downright shitty.
All I did was complete the dollar. Server followed me out the door screaming at me to give him more. I said “frick you” and drove off.

Why not just raise the price of the food items and wages of the waiter/waitresses?
The big fault with our system is we have a large contingent of the population that is notoriously bad at tipping and also notorious for being a bigger hassle to wait on.

The better the wait staff, the higher his/her wage.

Sorry you were more interested in your phone than doing your job, perhaps you should go back to busing tables.

Went to a hibachi place for my buddy’s birthday. There were 20+ in our party so we were sat in a “party” room with two grills. Our cook sucked as far as the entertainment went. The food was fine though. A different cook came out for the other side of our party. He was fantastic. I tipped him $40 and gave nothing to our cook.

I’ve had the same experience the past few times I’ve had hibachi in Baton Rouge. I guess there’s nothing like the old Koto’s around anymore.

Two things sir.
1. You were 100% correct to not leave a tip. Argument of the tipping system vs standard wage aside, the system in place (tipping) is based upon tipping to encourage good service. News flash, it is harder work to give good service than bad. So if you tip the same regardless of quality of service, well... We are always going to tend to get shitty service. The only safeguard against this is to NOT tip for shitty service. What you did was your obligation under the social contract to protect us all against continued shite service. Thank you.
2. As a fellow South Louisianan, STOP perpetrating those fricker Californians theft of our initials. You are in L.A. and not LA god damnit. LA is our home state. The city you are currently visiting is L.A. I was confused for the first paragraph of the OP. “WTF? How is Napoleon visiting home?” That town needs to be arrested and sentenced for three to five for Theft. Damn cultural appropriation of our letters if you ask me.

Absolutely, but I don't have a problem giving no tip at all. I'm not paying someone for them not doing their job

Maybe it will be a wake up call for him. If you don’t like your tips, look in the mirror.

I have no idea how you tell a server their service was poor, other than with the tip. They fact about service is that it must be spot on 100% of the time to expect a good tip 100% of the time.
I will tip for good service regardless of food quality (I don't go to places where I know the food is bad, so I appreciate good service even if the kitchen misses out on the food). I won't go back to a place that serves poor food twice. When we eat out, I expect decent service and am turned off when the service is poor.
Hopefully your $2.00 tip left a message that the server understood (the learning lesson cost them $6-$8.00).

I've done it a few times. The worst time was at the IHOP on College Drive, when I gave a 10% tip and the waitress started crying loud as could be (weeping like a baby) as she was running the card.
ETA: Actually, it might have even been ridiculous like a dollar tip.

If you stiff the server because of bad service and pay with a credit card, then be sure to check your account. The server may help themselves to a 40% tip. Happened to me at a nice restaurant in Vegas. $650 meal (bottle of wine was $450 of that)
Cops weren’t interested and manager was a dick. He wouldn’t produce the credit card slip when asked.
