would you stiff a server that gave you bad service, yet good food?

Went to a place I like in Glendale, a place I go every time we are in LA. Server is very surly, like I was at 'Dick's Last Resort". Ice teas come after apps and food. Server ignored requests for drink with eye contact made. Food was great. Ate. Asked for check. Ten minutes pass, ask again. Another ten minutes pass, I ask the bus boy. Another five minutes pass and I go into the kitchen and say "I'm about to walk out if I don't get my check". Check comes right away.

It's $40.25. I leave $42 on the table and leave. I feel sort of bad about it, seeing that I long ago served people. Yet it wasn't busy and there were no odd requests or issues.
Just downright horrible service.

I usually consider a "stiff" 10%. This was the lowest tip I ever gave. But come on, sitting with a table of empty drinks, empty plates and boxes and waiting for thirty minutes seemed way too much.
(time not at all hyperbole)

Tiny Armenian place with only 12 or so tables, not crowded. food came out quick, but drinks took multiple reminders. Never got checked on, never got refill, never got my pita bread with my hummus.

Shitty service is shitty service. I will just say I don't leave much if service is bad and that is coming from someone who waited tables all through college.

Never knew how ridiculous tipping was until I traveled outside the US.

Why not just raise the price of the food items and wages of the waiter/waitresses? The better the wait staff, the higher his/her wage.

The server doesn't cook your food.

Yep if the food is coming out of the kitchen slow and the service is still good the server still gets 20-25%.

Probably not, but I sure as heck ain’t gonna go in a kitchen and chase down my check. If they don’t want me to pay, I’ll bounce haha

Tipping is an American thing, I overtip in the US if the service is good, but don’t mind withholding if service is bad. Service is better abroad.

As a person who has had to work for tips before, I can agree. Sounds like your server was not doing their job well. They’re supposed to be working for that tip. I would have tipped more personally because I would feel bad if I didn’t, but if you get bad service and then stiff that’s on the server for not doing their job. Especially if they were slow yet fully staffed.

You pay for the food whether it's good or not. Service is subjective and you have the option to pay the server according to your guidelines. Don't reward mediocre effort.

That was plan B, but there were four of Glendale's finest eating in there and I do not want to spend a night at Twin Towers.

The kitchen was open and was five feet from my table.

I even got everyone to stand up and act like we were leaving and server didn't even look at us.

She was a BITCH, and had this attitude like she was doing us a favor. If I didn't plan the evening around going to this place I would have walked out after she first lied about a drink she said was "out" that I was looking at in cooler. It was like the trigger to knowing the rest of meal was going to have issues.

(they had Snapple in cooler, I hadn't had Snapple in years, looked at and asked for Peach Snapple, and she assured me it was out. Then when I pointed it out she got upset and said those were for take out only.)

Speaking of Dems, big news here is San Fran passed a law that all new companies can no longer provide their employees with food as it was hurting restaurants. lol, WTF??

don't be obtuse.

There are plenty of cheap as frick places in LA. It's probably cheaper to eat here than NOLA, if not counting high end places.

It's Mediterranean and the meals were all $9-12. It's one of the highest rated Mediterranean places in all of LA.

Hell for lunch I had quick table service at a taco stand on Olivera and tipped $10 on $40. $40 - $50 has seemed to be the cost of meals. Food is cheap here, even grocery and produce are much cheaper.
It was two adults, two kids. One kid only wanted Fries and Hummus and didn't get a meal. Drinks come with meal.

Yes I do seek out high rated inexpensive places.

I wouldn't leave that shitty server shite. Real talk.

Also, I am like you and hate not tipping people but damn when your job is to serve others and you can't even fricking do that, then frick them. Also, I hope you know this, but the server doesn't actually cook the food for you, so how good/bad the food is, should have no bearing on how you tip the server. If anything, seek out the cook and tip him.

Also, one time I went to this one restaurant and when the bill came, I gave the woman cash. She came back but gave me only bills, and no actually change. Guess she just pocketed the change, so I left the bitch no tip. If she would have given me the correct change instead of pocketing the loose coins, I would have given her a decent tip, but instead she gets to keep the $0.69 or whatever it was. And it was an expensive meal too.
