Would you purchase a used car from a business fleet?

Test drove a 2018 Toyota Highlander XLE yesterday. Really liked it. $34k with 29k miles. Option for Carmax extended warranty.

After the drive, the salesman let me know it had two prior owners and was part of business fleet. Also has an accident on its carfax report but didn’t indicate any serious damage.

Bad idea?

I personally would never buy from car max, but there’s a dealer here in Florida that sells a lot of business leases. I would never buy a vehicle with a prior accident, that’s more important than it’s prior use.

Why not? I’ve had good experiences there in the past, but that was 2009ish.

Business fleet is probably decently taken care of as most of those have standard, required maintenance schedules.

Rental fleet, frick that

How do you treat a rental or company car?
I wouldn't buy mine

Their 100 point inspections are a joke, they are a wholesale buyer and seller than deals in volume and they couldn’t give a shite less about you after the sale.

No sounds like a good idea actually.

I have a friend that owns a car dealership. He told me, “buying a used car is a crap shoot. Some are good. Some are not. No amount of inspections or car facts reports will show how good or how bad a car is. Heck, I saw a transmission go out on a brand new car 6 months after they
drive it off the lot.”

We've bought two from rental fleets and had no problem. Once in '09 once in '18. Both had unexpectedly low mileage for their model year at the time.

People always say they treat rental cars like shite but what does that even mean? spill coke on the floor? OK my kids would've done that within 48 hours anyway. At least I'm pretty confident Enterprise is running regular oil changes etc.

I have treated all of my company trucks pretty well. I’d buy my previous 2 in a heart beat. My current one is a 2019 Silverado and I had manufacturer issues so I wouldn’t buy it, but not because I rode it hard and put it up wet.

It’s a used car that has probably been maintained better than most vehicles. It might have been abused but it probably also had at least some maintenance.

I've purchased two from Carmax over the years (one with a previous accident in history) and never had any issue with either.

Buy the extended warranty from them, if you need the peace of mind and even have someone you trust to check it over.

I like Carmax myself, but to each his own.

I bought a 2 year old Lexus es350 with 18k miles that was a corporate car for about 14k less than brand new. It has been great but as always you want to do your homework.

Try having sex with the car. I hear a lot of OTers compare car buying to wife shopping.

Depends on what it is.

Ford Fusion with 50k on it. Probably fine.

Work truck with 100k on it, not a chance in hell.

As my dad would ask …you know the difference between a 4 wheel drive and a rental / business use vehicle? There are just some places that a 4 wheel drive won’t go.

I'm not buying that work truck with 50k on it.

You probably treat your personal vehicle like shite as well then.

Is a Warranty available?

I’d probably pull the trigger on this with a reasonably-priced warranty.

Good luck.
