My wife, on the other hand, thinks 11 years old is an okay age to babysit. Her argument is that she was babysitting at 11 so it must be okay.
There’s a difference between making sure the kid doesn’t kill himself for a couple hours and being gone all day for two weeks...

I'm a little concerned about your parenting skills, letting your kid play in traffic and now letting another child watch your child??

I KNEW a comment like this was coming!

We need a baby sitter for about two weeks during the summer and my wife wants to ask the 11 year old girl down the street to spend those days at our house watching him.
Will one of the 11 year olds parents be home? That's the only way I'd allow someone that age to watch my kid.

11 year old sibling, sure. Someone else’s 11 year old?
Hell, I'd be more concerned it if was an 11 year old sibling. He/she is more likely to be comfortable and let something serious slide.

I would not recommend it. How many hours a day do y'all need someone to watch your son? I would find a 16 year old (or older) who is CPR certified.

No, I don't believe so. I'm with all of you, trust me. My wife is the only one who thinks it's okay. She's all like "it'll give her something to do and some money to make during the summer". I, on the other hand, am all like "No, I love our son and want him to be safe".

To quote John Mulaney: "It's like hiring a horse to watch your dog."

“Alright, here's the number where we'll be, where we keep the dog food, and you're a horse.”

I would be nervous to leave an 11 year old alone by themselves all day much less put the life of a baby in their hands.
Just find a high schooler out for summer. One with references...
I now feel like I need to detail this out for you. She/he needs references, should come over and meet said child with one of you present before actually babysitting, be somewhat interviewed, a plus if they can drive for emergencies, plus if CPR certified. Knows how to turn a stove on and off... dial 911. You know, basics.

DUDE, this is just disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourself.

you must be kidding...no way an 11 year old could handle a crisis, like, 3 yo chocking on food, severe weather, etc....don't do it and tell your wife she is nuts

go on care.com and you can find someone with references that will do the job and not break the bank.

I did from the start. I immediately shot down the idea but she keeps bringing it back up as if it's a logical choice. I told her it was a stupid idea. Y'all are just confirming that I'm not being unreasonable.

What would y'all do? Let the 11 year old babysit or get someone else like a high schooler or something?
Well the high schooler is just gonna call some guy over and give him a handy on your couch, so...

Well technically thats against the law. If something happens oe cops find out it would be on you
Louisiana has no such law regarding minimal age to be alone, if memory serves.

We did this for our girls and interviewed a couple of potential sitters. One woman I really liked for the job threw out the name of a mutual friend and after a call to him she was out. Be careful with this site. If you go to a large church ask some of the women who work in the nursery. If they can’t do it they may know someone who could.
