Would you ever ask your employer for a sabbatical?

Does your employer offer them to employees after so many years? Dammit I need one. But evidently lawyers don't do that sort of thing. If somebody were to take 6 months off, then some other jackleg would swoop in and steal all his clients.

I suspect that millennials, with their fixation on "quality of life" and other magical bullshite probably wouldn't hesitate to ask for such a benefit. When I was coming up in the business, I would have been laughed out of the firm. People didn't have "quality of life" back then.

But man, I need about 6 months on top of a mountain with no phone. Ugh.

my buddy works for shell and they told him he could take one

basically, "we're not paying you while you're gone, but we'll give you your job back when you return, given it's within an amount of time we approve of"

When my dad was 55 or 56 he told his long time employer that he was going to take 6 months off. They approved it but he never went back to work

If you need a chef wherever you go, I'll cook and clean for room and food. I'll buy my own liqour.

I'd like to hike the Appalachian Trail end to end before I get to old to try it. Takes about 6 mos if you hustle.

Says he needs a sabbatical.

Makes fun of people he suspects take sabbaticals.

That’s the problem with getting on the treadmill . Once you get on it you can’t get off it.

Back in 2009 when the real estate market was down and the development business was slow I took off and hiked the Appalachian Trail. Had the money saved, it was something I had always wanted to do, and the timing just seemed right. Was there some starting over that had to take place when I got back? Sure, of course...but I would not have changed that decision for anything. It was one of the best things I have ever done.

Actually, come to think of it, yesterday was my 11 year anniversary of finishing.

Just wanted to also say hiking the A.T. is a great networking opportunity. It also looks great on a resume. I think it had alot to do with me getting hired and it had alot to do with me hiring a few employees since then.

I know of a software company that offers sabbaticals, but I think it’s usually only 6 weeks. But they will also pay for whatever trip you go on.

That said, many employees don’t last the 5 years that it takes to earn it, due to burnout.

I know there’s a satirical element to this post, but I do think it’s funny when “boomers” complain about getting alpha’d by millennials taking lots of PTO,
Sabbaticals, working less hours, etc.
