Would You Drive This? 1981 Datsun Maxima

This 1981 Datsun 810 Maxima is powered by a 2.4-liter inline-six paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Finished in metallic blue over blue cloth upholstery, the car is equipped with 14? alloy wheels, a sunroof, air conditioning, power accessories, and a factory cassette stereo.
This was back when the Maxima was a rear drive sports sedan. Not a frumpy front drive, CVT shite box. This 1981 model had the same engine as the Datsun 240Z at the time.
Nissan had to bring a luxury car to the US market to compete with the Toyota Cressida, Pontiac 6000, BMW 5 series, and Chrysler New Yorker since Infiniti wasn’t around yet. The extremely reliable and surprisingly quick 810 Maxima was what they offered.
Eventually the Maxima was followed by the Mitsubishi Diamanté, Mazda 929, and Acura Legend. Then Infiniti came along, and Nissan cheapened the Maxima and built it on a front drive architecture. It was still cool until about 2003 or so. But the Maxima lost all appeal as a sports sedan when it adopted the cheap interiors, corporate CVT and “fat” styling and design in the mid 2000’s.

Naw baw, the 810 was an econo-shitbox compared to the second generation (1985) Maxima which came afterwards.
The 810s had 120 hp, the 2nd generation were front wheel drive but the 3.6 l V6 was 157 hp.
The old man had a clone of this:

Sure. Why not? Looks sporty.

Yes, but I like the boxy 1980s Japanese cars.
And I think Nissan is going to cancel the Maxima soon. They neutered it over the years and nobody wants it anymore.

240-280Z was the shite, especially when you put 3 weber carbs on it.

I had a Datsun 210. Not nearly as fancy as this.

The Maxima was sort of the Japanese BMW, while the Toyota Cressida was the Mercedes Benz - complete with the wood trim and the round ac vents:

My neighbor growing up had a Datsun truck. It wouldn’t die. Neither would he.

The 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th gen (ending in 03) Maxima's were great cars. I had a 2001 as my first car out of college that I drove until 2016.

Had a buddy with one(Datsun pickup). Didn't need keys. You could start it with a penny or flathead screwdriver
