Depending on price its a direct competitor to the M2.

What is CGI?
CGI is a type of cast iron developed in the 1950s-60s to be a middle ground between Gray Iron and Ductile/Nodular Iron. Any Cast Iron is made of both Iron and Graphite, and the difference in the makeup and structure of those two elements are what determine the material properties of a given cast iron type. CGI has tightly interconnected graphite molecules that are short and thick in shape. This results in a variety of material qualities that are hugely beneficial in an automotive application:
-Roughly 400-500% greater fatigue resistance than Aluminum, and ~200% more than Gray Iron.
-Higher thermal conductivity than other cast irons
-Great internal damping properties
-Roughly 50-75% stronger in shear strength than Gray Iron, and can be machined down to match Gray Iron shear strength at significant weight savings.
-Far more fatigue resistant than Aluminum in higher temperatures.
-Due to CGI's high strength, it can technically be machined to be lighter than aluminum while maintaining the same strength levels (although generally, CGI blocks are not machined this far in order to keep strength levels high).
Who uses CGI?
CGI is used by a number of OEMs, namely Ford and, of course, BMW. Their exact material compositions are generally different, but they are generally comparable in strength. Toyota also uses CGI in their Nascar program, with their V8s being cast from CGI.
The disadvantages of CGI are generally in machining and manufacturing, which is where having access to OEM levels of tooling is hugely important, and can both streamline the manufacturing process and reduce costs.
So, is the MKV Supra using CGI in its motor?
Idk, ask Tada-San. :p
From what I know, we're not getting a plain jane B58. What exactly is this new motor? I don't know, but as more information trickles in, the BMW-Toyota partnership starts to make more sense. CGI is one of those factors that could really shed some light on the nature of the Toyota-BMW relationship, and also shows that there's a lot more than meets the eye when it comes to orchestrating the millions of moving parts in a collaboration as big as this.

You are correct in your post though.

Honestly on the low side for hp this day and age.

For a Supra? GTFO. That's an insult to the Supra heritage.

Not even a dual-clutch? No manual option? This isn't a sports car, this is a soccer mom mobile.

The same crowd that thinks a new Mustang, Charger or Camaro are "sports" cars.
I'm a car fan(love BMWs and other import cars and have never been big on American Muscle cars) and I'd rather have a Performance pack mustang or GT350 whichever is closer in price to the supra. That may eventually come out. One day. Maybe 2020?
This is a BMW Z4 Coupe with an ugly designed Toyota body and badge.
I'm very familiar with the engine that this has and it is a great engine but Toyota has really milked this whole supra thing to death now and they're bragging and teasing way too hard for a rebadged BMW.

I'm a Z4 owner and belong to a social media group for fellow owners...just a place to ask questions about repairs/mods/etc. With the Z4 having been discontinued, there is quite a bit of excitement about this BMW and Toyota project. Z4s are a blast to drive, as are Supras. Put the two together? Sheeeiiittt...that's going to be one fun fricking car to own.

Tada has explicitly stated the Inline-6 will have TQ numbers similar to the RC-F. Which TQ is sitting at 530N*m.
If you estimate that it will make 90% of that torque at HP peak, and guess HP peaks at 6500 rpm, that comes out to around 430 hp.
If this is the case, the new Supra will blow the doors off of the current M4, which is no slouch.
I won't be trading in my MKIV, but a few years down the road I might just have to get a MKV.
ETA: It is almost certain that the MKV will never dominate the highways for two decades the way the MKIV did, but by all indications it will be one hell of a great driver's car.

People using the 335/262 numbers are using the B58 current numbers.

I understand this is a car that's going to be tuned like crazy, but I hoped for a little more from the stock I6. It's not bad though. It's basically a boosted up 435i.
Posted on 7/18/18 at 8:59 am to 50_Tiger
335 would be a disappointment, but it isn't mathematically possible if the torque figure is over 380 ft-lbs unless they tune the engine like a diesel

What do you think the final HP and TQ numbers will be on the i6?

I'm familiar with CGI blocks from the 6.7 Superduty and 2.7 ecoboost. I haven't heard any rumors to suggest that there would be anything different that a revised B58 with higher output than what's currently offered. A Normal technical update in the BMW engine life cycle.
We will see.

Besides the gay interior decorator vomit paint job, it looks good.

it's camouflaged, they haven't officially released it yet.

Current B58 has various levels of tune.
Can easily see a Technical updated B58 around 385 Hp and 390lb ft or 530 NM

I'm hoping for over 400 hp, but with a broad torque curve and as light as it will be, it should move pretty good.

How long will this take before white trash with neck tats are riding around in them with spoilers and loud mufflers?

That's called the new M2 competition and you can go order one now.
