I’m pretty sure they had AC in the 50s.

I grew up in Louisiana in the 40s and 50s. Yes, some department stores (not all) and most movie theaters were air conditioned, but no schools and only a few homes had even window units. I entered LSU in 1959, and none of the dorms and very few class rooms had a/c.

We slept by a partially open window to catch the breeze created by our attic fan.

It certainly did...

Yep, you definitely caught me. I can still couldn't properly spell the word I was looking for and gave up and changed the wording.

I have no doubt there are many that would take the trade-off of no ac so long as they can be racist out in the open all they want

My dad said it sucked arse with no AC through his childhood in South LA. That said you do have a point on other things. Life was simpler.

That wasn't a problem - the city sprayed DDT almost every evening - we would ride along behind the jeep spraying the chemical and enjoy the aroma.

We probably don't have many people on the OT that could comment on living in the 50s, but if you could trade the present for living in the 50s, would you do it? My ONLY hesitation is air conditioning. Living in Louisiana makes AC a modern day necessity.

I guess you're generally ok with polio?

When my dad was a child, his parents’ houses had no AC and schools had no AC, in central LA.

I’ve asked how they slept in the heat. He said they used no covers, but they had never lived with AC. That was just the way people lived.

How many have you asked? I’m guessing none.

I've never explicitly asked, but some of the stories that my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and in-laws share don't exactly give me the impression that they long to go back...

A couple of LSU men's dorms didn't have AC in the early 90's. At least it was motivation to go to class.

There are people in every generation that think the current one is going to hell in a handbasket. It's not the generation, it's a state of mind of the observer.

People sitting around here moping about the current times would've been moping about it not being the 20s if they lived back then.

No way and not just because of the air conditioning

Nothing about the 50s strikes me as particularly interesting. The 80s were kind of an abomination. The 40s right after WWII was probably great. The early 60s were probably awesome, as well as the 70s.

Yes. Living in the 50s would have been great and our bodies would be able to adapt without any AC
