bet you can't stand what's happening in South Africa.

It is sad to look at conditionS not only in South Africa but across the entire continent

It is quite horrible. I have an uncle that was working in South Africa. Lots of poverty and hurt. Lack of access to services and resources. Apartheid left lasting scars that will not heal easily. Innocent people are getting hurt from the fallout.

But on a positive note there are many South Africans (and others across the continent of Africa) that are putting in work trying to create change and end decades of discrimination and racism.

Born in 1950 in Acadiana. Yes, it was hot. But drive through the downtown residential areas of any city today and you will see houses built on 2-foot high piers. Large, high attics which once sported attic fans that could lift a Huey.

With the big windows open you could produce a veritable wind storm that made you use covers at night. Today’s homes not made to handle the heat without a/c.

Mom and Dad put a window unit in their bedroom in 1958. The real heat was in August-September at school. Maybe just one fan in classroom. That was miserable.

But living was nicer. 1958 until 1968 was great except I was a teen then and that kinda sucked in general — as now, too. Still, you felt safe anywhere at anytime.

I recall the fears of polio, Asian Flu and all the childhood ills but we didn’t shut down society. We dealt with it.

The beginnings of the Space Race was exhilarating

The Vietnam War was terrible but I didn’t protest, I went, I fought and I survived.

As for technology, a good portable transistor radio and a good rotary TV antenna sufficed. You don’t miss what does not yet exist. Do you miss those self-driving cars and 24-hour VR glasses yet?

I was in my 30s for the ‘80s and raising three daughters. I’m an earlier adopter so the girls had all the Ataris, Segas, etc. they wanted and I was into early PCs (286, then 386 and then Pentiums). The ‘80s were definitely cool.

As for 2020, it reminds me some of 1968 — political/racial unrest of all sorts, assassinations, height of Vietnam, tumultuous elections, Hong Kong Flu, and some pretty good college football.

I’m looking forward to the ‘20s and, hopefully, the ‘30s and beyond.

I live in Moscow, and when people ask what its like I say think of the U.S. in the 50s.

First it is uncommon to have A.C., but the weather is mild so we don't care. The reason it feels like the 50s is because the women take pride in being the homemaker.

For example, if my shirt isn't ironed my wife wont let me wear it. She says "what kind of wife would I be to let my husband leave the house like this." She enjoys cleaning and cooking, and she does this while having a job. And for the most part, this is the norm in Russia.

At first I tried to tell her to relax, it is ok. But she really takes pride in this so I am ok with it. I feel spoiled a.f. but I love her!

So if living in the 50s was like this, I'm all in!

The world today is so fast paced and so information saturated that it seems like we're spiraling toward a future where evil is dominant and there's nowhere to go to avoid it.

For you this is completely under your control. There's plenty of shite to do online that isn't that bad.

as long as they build homes with lots of windows, and an attic fan like they did beck then. I'm all in for the 50's.

I'd just move to the 1950s versions of California or the PNW.

Sure was horrible back then when they had more fathers at home, didn’t have their children being shot by gangbangers (Or pointless mayhem), stable work, strong churches and family units. Strong HBCUs. Lower abortion rates, Satchmo, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr, et al.

There are people, both white and black, that are working to stop the ongoing problems.

It is a very bad situation

I am 65, grew up south of Houston, was hot an humid, we didn’t have AC in the house until 1966, probably 85 % of the homes in our neighborhood had no AC. All of my grandparents lived in north La, none ever had AC in their house. If you never had it you didn’t miss it, just like a family having two cars back then, it was considered extravagant by most middle class families. Kids today would consider living as the middle class did in the 50s and 60s third world conditions.

People are having their land stolen from them that they did not take from anyone because of their skin color. The government largely ignores it or supports it too.

My dad (born in ‘52) grew up in a house that Had An attic fan. They would open the windows and turn on the fan. He said eventually they got a window unit in my grandfathers room only. On really hot nights him and his 6 siblings would fight for Spanger in the floor in my grandparents room for the A/C

Hasn't been a thing in decades. What you are seeing now is a racial genocide using semi ancient history as a convenient excuse, similar to the way American leftists use slavery here
