Would it be wrong to sterilize people who have certain criminal convictions?

I think it would help our society as a whole of certain crimes had the option of sterilization like theft,rape, murder,attempted murder, drug trafficking etc. any serious crime that allows someone to get out of jail should require these people to be sterilized so they won’t be raising children
I’m not understanding all of the hate for this idea. I’m not asking for euthanization or chemical castration, but to just get their nuts fixed. Something many men choose to do every day
