Hugo. Layed down so much timber that it took 20 years to get our woods back.

Wilma in 2005. Everybody was complacent in south Florida after Frances and Jeanne the year before. I didn’t put up shutters and after the eye passed over my house, shite got real.

It was a hell of a break in.

Katrina by far.

Katrina had more of a personal effect on me with having my house flooded with 4 1/2 feet of water.

Had to relocate for 5 months before being able to move back into the house after LOTS of hard work getting my house back to move in condition. Although not fully finished, it took several more months to complete the work.

Rita.

Lots of family without power and water for 3-4 weeks. We have 3 extra bedrooms all filled. A big blow up mattress in study. A blow up in living room.

After about 3 nights it was pure hell!

Ida in Denham Springs. House creaking. Stuff hitting the house. Power out seven days. Fortunately not much damage, but it was the largest, most direct hit we have had in this house. Tense night. “Slept” in the hallway part of the night. Miserable week.

Katrina annihilated our camp on the northshore and disrupted life pretty significantly for a long time. When it was coming in, it was the first storm I was ever really worried about.

Andrew was the first really bad storm in a while it seemed, so the power outages and damages possibly felt worse than they were. I was in the process of moving out of an apartment in Old Goodwood, so went to stay with my parents. Couldn’t get back to the apartment for a week. First experience with post-hurricane refrigerator.

So many smaller ones I cant recall, but tbh the flood in 2016 gave me far worse damage than any hurricane.

Betsy. I was a kid, which was the last time I was stupid enough to stay for a hurricane.

I rode out Andrew in BR and the damage there was worse than I expected that far from the coast.
Rode out Georges in 98 in midcity NOLA. Not bad.
Evaced to BR for Katrina and it was a non-event there, but I spent the next year restoring my house in Slidell.
In Harahan for Zeta a couple years ago. Not a big deal.
I was in Harahan for Ida and it was pretty bad. We had suspected tornado activity on my block.

Worst I ever stayed through- Betsy in 1965.

Worst damage- Ida. But I was in California.

I went through Zeta’s eye but I didn’t find it all that bad.

Although not a major hurricane, Hurricane Hilda in 1964 caused damage to my in-laws' new Oldsmobile and much of their clothing. My FIL was working down the river and they lived in a trailer (they had a nice home in Opelousas but stayed in a 3 br trailer near his work site).

As the hurricane approached they put a lot of their better clothing and other items in the back of their car and drove up to our apartment off Highland north of campus. My FIL obviously parked in a low area because after the hurricane passed, his car was completely under water and their possessions were ruined and their car never ran right again.

The entire way every single pine tree bigger than a sapling had snapped about 10’ up and we’re laid over almost neatly like dominos.

If you flew a plane into PCB from the north you could see the pines blown down well into GA.

Hurricane Michael was an F3 tornado that was 20-30 miles wide. Had it hit further west into Destin/30A/PCB it would be much better known, but it wiped Mexico Beach and an entire Air Force base off the map.

Ida- even with the generator on the house, sitting in the eye wall for five hours with the family and dogs inside was terrifying. No cell phone service, no TV, no way to communicate with anyone, will never do that again. Not worth the risk.
