The 80s was a good decade for puckups, and SUVs were legit offroad-worthy...but the cars were terrible except for some Tototas and Nissans.

Motors were shite because of regulations and poor technology.

1980s were horrible for cars. Good decade for trucks though.
Current time is pretty bad too. Nearly every crossover looks like a blob/minivan and the Japanese forgot how to design good looking cars.
Some notables:
The Ford Blob:
The Nissan Blob:
The Chevy Blob:
The afterthought Acrura grill that doesn’t match the rest of the car:
The angry Pontiac Aztek from Lexus:
It used to be taboo to have cutouts in the bumper when there was no fog light or anything. Everyone does it now.

The wrangler was introduced in 87 with square headlights.

1987 Buick GN was pretty special.
Dad had one and it was a gorgeous car.

Yeah, I don’t know what Lexis is thinking with their current grills. They all look awful.

They all look tacked on and hideous. It sucks because I know Lexus makes a very sturdy, comfortable car.
It’s easy to pick on them because they may be the worst in the business now. If there were not rolling out multiple new Toyota-based crossovers, their sales would be down.
I call this one the angry Dustbuster:
This is the angry Pontiac Vibe:

Drove a 1990 powder-blue Ford Topaz with automatic seatbelts. Yeesh!! Still have nightmares about that thing. And talk about a babe repellent!!

I don’t see any decade worse than the 80’s for design, save for perhaps a few like the 280Z, Vette, Z-28, RX7, and T-A, and Toyota trucks. The rest were dogs.

The 80's mustangs are laughably bad. I was at a restaurant with a group from work and we walked across an 80's model mustang. We are all in mid 20's so I knew most would not know what kind of car it was. I asked and not a single one of them knew it was a mustang. Only reason I knew was because my uncle had one when I was a kid (it was bad arse back then).
That style is just so foreign from all the other ones. The others at least share some characteristics.

The Chevy Square Bodies (C/K pickup, Blazer, Suburban) and the full sized Fords were pretty sweet in the 1980s. They were simple, rugged, and dependable. Their utilitarian focus made their square designs more appropriate. Trucks were not expected to win races back then, and the small block V8 and 4 speed manuals were just fine.
Their cars, on the other hand, were horrendous. Look at the “downsized” 1980 Caprice/Impala compared to the more powerful and more stylish mid 1970s models and you will see the problem instantly. Same with the “downsized” Lincoln’s, Cadillacs, and Chrysler’s of the 1980s and 1990s.
To make matters worse, emissions requirements were forced US automakers to basically take their monster engines from the 1970s and “starve” them until they met targets. That’s how we got V8 Fords and Chevys with 145 horsepower. If you had to buy a new car in the 1980s, you knew you were taking a step down in design and power train from just 5-6 years ago. It stayed that way until fuel injection became the norm.

What the frick is Lexus doing with these out of control grills. They have ruined the look of the LX and GX. They absolutely suck.

I objectively know that the 5.0 fox bodies (later versions) were not good looking cars, but I can’t not like them even today because they were the shite back when I was starting to drive. The early version that someone posted already is hideous.
I’d drive this one all day long.

Exception to the norm. The Buick GN and Monte Carlo were actually risky and bold by 1980s standards.

The worst was the 70s.
