World Cup tourists aren’t leaving tips

As New York City transforms into a giant international watch party, local bartenders and servers are discovering that many visitors didn’t get the memo about America’s tipping culture.
An estimated 1.2 million soccer fans are flooding the region for FIFA World Cup Matches at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., packing bars and restaurants from morning kickoffs to late-night celebrations
The cash registers are ringing, the beer is flowing and the tables are full. But the tips are coming up short. And some cities are doing something about it.
Restaurants in places such as Kansas City, Atlanta and Philadelphia have begun adding automatic 20% gratuities to checks, during the tournament, according to industry groups and restaurant operators.
Supporters say the move is intended to protect American servers who rely heavily on gratuities and avoid confusion for visitors unfamiliar with American tipping norms.
At McCarthy’s Pub NYC on West 46th Street, waitress Louise Daggett said serving the international crowds has been equal parts exhausting and entertaining.
“Everyone has been really sweet . . . they’re loud and happy, very nice,” Daggett told The Post. But many are baffled by the American ritual of signing receipts and calculating tips.
“It’s very different. And a lot of people haven’t been leaving tips,” she said.
That can sting when a large group orders countless pints over several hours.
“There’s been a lot of tables that have come in and had a tab of almost $700,” Daggett said.

In many countries, there is minimal to no tipping because European restaurants pay staff like any other profession and workers don’t rely on tips, so customers assume they’ve already paid for service.

Good. Tipping when just drinking should be minimal anyway.

Yea because it is not commonplace in other parts of the world
Many Asian cultures actually see tips as an insult. They see it as a form of charity and you look down on them, or the employer takes it as if they aren't paying a fair wage.

Good. Tipping culture has gotten out of hand. Why do I need to tip a cashier or a mechanic? We should move to a system like Europe where you can round up to the next dollar if your bartender was taking care of you. Service industry workers don't want that because they'd lose all those unclaimed cash tips they don't pay taxes on.

Tipping and rounding up are both out of control

Any news about tipping from soccer fans at strip clubs?

I hate tipping culture but this is different, context matters. Non-tippers crowding in for a crazy event and the servers are expected to just accept that?
I don’t mind the bars autogratting for these wild events

Flew home from Seattle airport yesterday.
Mexican restaurant at SeaTac,
Grabbed a water from cooler near register,
Self checkout
Screen asked if I wanted to leave a 22% tip.
Haha Hell no

I thought all places added 15-20% for large groups.

They know they just DGAF about America's tipping culture.

In a restaurant. They don’t do that when you go into a bar full of people

Good. Neither do I anymore.
I only tip for grocery delivery and when we eat out.
Also, just because we might spend $250 on a meal doesn't mean that the waiter worked harder than a $100 meal, so why the need for a $50 tip?
It's really ridiculous to anyone not from America.

Slipping a little into a g-string is world-wide.

People in this thread weirdly seem to be equating “tipping culture” (which, of course, has gotten out of control for things like fast food restaurants and random other industries that never had tipping) with the standard American practice of tipping at bars / sit-down restaurants, which has been commonplace/expected for like a century. I don’t blame the Europeans who may not know, but if you’re an American eating at a sit-down restaurant or going to a bar, you should tip (barring extremely rude/unprofessional service).
If America eventually decides to go the European route and mandate minimum wage for servers, and the restaurants increase their menu prices accordingly because it’s understood by everyone there will be no more tipping, then fine, but it’s not like that now. If you’re an American at a sit-down restaurant and don’t tip now because you don’t like “tipping culture”, you’re being a POS.

I work with some tech sales people that have HQ out of Australia and after a few months they realized the company won’t expense tips for customer dinners or parties and were left with some hefty price tags out of their own pockets.

I used to feel guilty and would always round up. Now I won't round up even if it's only a penny.

OK, but explain to us why it should be a sliding scale based on how well I decide to eat?
Why can't I just tip $20 on a $200 meal? That seems more than fair for 45 minutes of checking on me 2 or 3 times and refilling my drink once.
