Because I've been looking into it and I thought I would see what the OT would think. The employer is only going to tell you what you want to hear.
I've googled and read some horror stories so why not use the OT as another resource?

nobody is forcing the indians to go work there.

Oh ok, if that's how you sleep at night over false promises turning into slavery, more power to you.

its not like these guys go in not knowing what is up.

Actually that's exactly what it's like. They are given false information and then enslaved. These aren't the type of people that read the Drudge Report every day.

this is how many people live in poor parts of india

At least they're free, have fresh air, and have a family. They aren't granted that in Dubai.

And congrats for defending slavery. You should be proud.

Ive only visited there but worked next door in oman. I liked it but it was bad timing for me and being away for 35 days at a time sucked. My wife was pregnant and I even had a water pipe break in my house when I was away further complicating things.

being there during ramahdan sucks also. if your 1 month off is during ramahdan make sure and travel elsewhere.

so millions of indians working in dubai never get to come back and tell their fellow indians whats up? no phone calls, skype, etc?

I dont doubt that some people get taken advantage of but I think overall it is a net positive for people destined to live in a box and starve.

I think the system works well, I wish we would do it here in the US.

Honestly, I am on the fence... I originally did a skype interview for a job in Brussels, I did not get that one and was recommended for this job. Did the skype interview and got my invitation to go to the in person interview. It is in Houston and I have until Friday to let them know if I will attend.

So I've been looking into it all day really, at places, the area that I would be working etc. They e-mailed me all of the detail of the contract yesterday to look over to see if I would still be interested.

Are you fricking insane? Really, sit down for a minute and realize that you are advocating for the US to lure people in the third world to our country to exploit them as slave labor.

If you think this is a rational solution, then for frick's sake move to Saudi Arabia or to Dubai. That system is evil, and you're either evil or stupid if you think that should be implemented here.

My dad worked there over a decade in the O&G industry.

It's a crazy place and he made a bunch of money. It was nice, they lived in an Western populated subdivision.

Both he and my mom loved it. Was sad to leave it, but his company sold off all their assets there. Probably would of stayed there til he retired.

Only real negative experience was there was a string of robberies in his neighborhood. They pretty much knew exactly who was doing it but the cops wouldn't do anything about it. Basically it was some native Dubai kids and they told the outsiders to just take it, you are visitors to our country kind of deal. They were warned by others in the subdivision not to do anything to the kids if they caught them in the act, because if they hurt the kids they could get in deep shite.

You do realize you still pay taxes to the USA right? I mean I'm not sure how easy it is to lie, but if you are a US citizen and work then you are supposed to "pay" income tax.

I'd imagine you could find some good references, I'm pretty sure that women go over there to teach right? I mean I don't think theres any way I'd go if I was a single woman as then you'd be a non arab and a woman in a world dominated by arab men. But being a man, just realize where you are at and you will be fine.

I know a couple military guys that have been there for brief stops while they were deployed in that area, and they all had decent enough things to say.

Outside of better pay though, are you a school teacher it looks like or something higher education? I'm assuming its not really going to "change your career" like an O&G job or something else over there?

To qualify for Expat Tax exemption status you must remain outside of the US for 330 out of 365(or 366 given it's a Leap Year) days. Meaning if you take your month vacation to do some traveling through Europe, Asia, etc. as long as you don't come back to the US you can return to the US after 11 months. However, if you come back to the US during your month vacation you better stay there for a full 12 months if you want tax exemption status. Also I recommend when filing tax forms with your company as a new hire that you file as if you weren't going to achieve Expat status. This way in case if an emergency happens and you must leave the job and return to the states prior to reaching the 330 day mark you won't owe Uncle Same money. It will be much easier to get reimbursed than to pay up.

You're right. Let's abduct them and put them into slavery to save them from starving. Land of the Free, right?

You're advocating that America should become a slave state and denying it. If you were at least pro-slavery I might let this point pass.
