You'd be surprised how many of such rules are from lawyers due some ambulance chaser lawsuit somewhere.

Safety people have an impossible job getting dumbass, lazy operators to follow simple rules.

I take it you're either a safety person or a supervisor at one of these plants/refineries with a harsh statement like that. Or maybe just a an A-HOLE who has never stepped foot in an industrial setting.
I have seen many safety reps who go out on these "seek & destroy" missions with the intent to find violators and fire them so they can get a feather in their hat. And I have seen a rare few who go out with the intent that they will help educate or persuade violators to follow the rules.
As a former operator, I much rather deal with a safety rep that is willing to work with me instead of out to get me in trouble. At some time all operators take a shortcut here and there when no one is looking. Not right but it happens! I wouldn't say they are lazy due to it.

We just had a guy get run over by a God damn forklift.

Why?

The mask the forklift driver was wearing fogged up his safety glasses and didn’t see the guy walking down the road.

fricking insanity.

Can we get some GD details?

From someone who was there and assisted with getting him out of the unit after the accident:
It was a Honeywell operator that was sprayed in the face and upper body with HF. In his 28 + years at HW he says he has never seen HF burns that bad. He died about 5 hours after the exposure.

risk vs reward....remind yourself that 1) its an hourly job 2) the company is the one that gains from your risk

Jesus. Any idea how long the operator had been working there?

He was there for nearly 5 years, but has been a chem operator for nearly 20 years. He was a good friend of mine.

I’m numb today!!!

He was the poster child of a very good operator

What kind of PPE is required in a unit involving HF? I have dealt with sulfuric for many years but not HF.

Bro sorry but when all that safety churns out is boot restrictions and special glasses for dust… then you aren’t doing shut.

As someone who works in EHS let me assure you that most things above these rollouts are shot down by anyone who has to spend the money. Quite simply everyone cares about safety, until they have to spend the money. Then it’s on the back burner. Things like hard hats and steel toes is what management sees so they don’t mind spending on those kind of expenses. Any other projects to improve safety is like pulling teeth to get approval.

Most people think we don’t do shite and I was one of them, I came here from the field. But working in EHS is really eye opening to how much gets shot down.

I send my prayers as well.

But this is what happens when you let Alec Baldwin near a Honeywell plant.

When I worked in HF units, at the minimum was safety glasses and face shield. I've been in HF units where I wore a full body suit with a respirator. So for him to get hit in the face says he was not wearing a face shield. I've only been to Honeywell once and was never around their HF unit so I don't know what their safety rules are.
