It boils down to
1) The male may have stalker tendencies or be overzealous outside the bounds of normal behaviour.
2) she finds the male unattractive and simply wants an excuse to verify rejecting his advances.
The first case is understandable, but rare.
The latter case is superfluous, but much more common.
An attractive female is more likely to have the first case. Regular women usually create the latter as a narcissistic defense
