While I am no fan of directv, i would bet my house that the family made no effort at all to call directv and explain the situation, and instead ran to post on instagram for the likes. I would bet that directv would probably waive the fee knowing the full story.

That’s a different story. Sorry Linda.
My wife’s grandmother died about 5 years ago and lived in her own, still drove, etc.
DirectTV dropped the contract with no issues.

Didn't read the article but did they call DTV & explain that the woman passed away?
Either way, she is dead. What does it matter? Was it a bill generated by DTVs system? The computer doesn't know she is dead, it just might have been a process thing.
News outlets look for anything to do a report on.

AT&T has owned DTV for a few years, and brought their notorious “customer service” with them. Had DTV for >15 yrs, but cut them loose last year. They ran it into the ground, as expected. I don’t know the family tried to call them, but I’m positive it would have made zero difference.

Early Termination Fees are part of the reason why traditional cable is dying.

Ok.. so this is a non-story.

[quote]You don't think DirectTV was stupid to sign a deal with a 102 yo that may not be around to pay it?
I won't be paying for any debts of the deceased. That's not my cross to bear if my name is not on the contract. The risk is on DirectTV.

The OP's post is misleading. OP did not post the full story. The contract was in the daughter's name, not the 102 year old's name.
OP should edit.

When my parents both passed away in 2016, I had the miserable task of calling all the creditors that were sending bills from doctor and ect..... All the ones I dealt with were very considerate and almost all of them said they’d pray for my family. All the debt was wiped clean, being as my parents had no estate.

Without rules, there is chaos.

Cable companies don't have 2 year contracts.
I can cancel my cable whenever at no charge.

And another way for a customer to get fricked by the company. Let's face it, DirectTV isn't out anything.

Family should have shut up and paid the $160 fee.
Nope. Not their problem nor are they legally, ethically, or morally obligated to pay that debt.

If you actually read the article and not the OP's quoted misleading post, you would see that the contract was in the daughter's name and not the deceased's name, so you would be wrong.

I must confess, I did only read parts of the thread and misleading title. You are correct, I am wrong in that case. Daughter owes the money legally, ethically and morally.

I don't think OP read the entire article either.
