quote:

Isabel Albright of San Lorenzo was among the oldest people in America - living through two world wars, 18 presidents and six moon landings. She was born before television came into being.

quote:

Albright died last December at the remarkable age of 102. The family has been repairing the house for sale, sifting through boxes, closing up a life that spanned a whole century.

Which was why the last bill from DirecTV seemed so galling: Although she lived more than 100 years, Albright still received an "early termination fee'' from DirecTV. Or at least the family did - and they were stunned.

"They told us... we're going to charge you $160 for an early termination fee,'' Manrique scoffed. "She's gone. Nobody's living (here). We're selling the house. You're going to tell us we have to keep the service at a house that's not ours?"

Meh, ignore it and let them file a claim on the estate.

I mean technically, but barely. I know it sounds cool for clicks, but come on.

I mean I hate these big companies and their fees but they terminated the contract early. They also got the fee waved and an apology after they ran to the media.

Moral of the story - don't sign multiyear contracts when you are 100 years old.

shite copy writing.

I'm factually "among the oldest people living in America" too.

Hatchet job "reporting".

Family should have shut up and paid the $160 fee.

Do you think the family didn't lead with that information?

She probably had equipment issues and replaced the box. Quite often when they do this and have a minimum number of months you have to keep the service they gloss over that part.

She signed the contract.

She knew what she was getting into.

She shoulda lived longer and fulfilled her contractual obligations.

That's EXACTLY when you should sign multiyear contracts.

I closed a business and my security company wanted to know when they could install the new system in my house. They said I had months left on my contract. Yeah, okay. Buh bye.

I think the opposite is true, you should run up as much unsecured debt as possible if you're close to 100 years old or terminal.

Why the family even gave a second thought to DirecTV is amazing to me. They're looking for attention even though DirecTV has no recourse. Type up a form letter and send it to all unsecured creditors telling them politely the customer is deceased.

If I get some terminal disease, I'm getting every credit card I can and living it up with family and friends. Unsecured debts are worthless when the creditor passes on.

You exactly don't know me at all to allege that.

I tip well, ain't scared to overpay for stuff, pay for stuff going wrong that ain't my fault, and sometimes say "thank you" when "frick you" is more applicable.

Life is too short to sweat the small stuff (like $160 when it's OWED).

In that situation, I would have

a) already have been handling Mee-Maw's finances so she wouldn't have personally had that issue
b) paid the early termination fee if I were stupid enough to get a plan that required it or was non-transferable and
c) not publicly complained about it.

By whom is it owed? Did the family sign that contract, or did the deceased?

In America, it costs money to die, no one gets out of here for free.

I'd assume the deceased.

That's the way the article read.

Technically the estate could bear responsibility, I'd pay it and move on.
