i doubt Home Improvement was the first, but it was certainly an iconic show around my childhood that created this meme of the bumbling, helpless man who needed to be reared in by his wife. this meme really became prominent in TV in the 90s and continues today

I don't think it's gender exclusive for a fit husband OR wife to subtly recommend a tubby spouse reel it in or face possible consequences. Why must men be so thin skinned about something so common?

Well, it’s a curious set of situations. In one situation (opposite of the commercial) people demand societal changes, but in the other situation, the other group is supposed to accept it.
This is a strange mindset that spans pretty much everything.
You don’t have to be bothered by it, Scruffy isn’t, but it is very enjoyable when people are forced to defend one while condemning the other.
