I said it wasn't' an entitlement to me. I paid into it. Who cares what the govt calls it. Everything to them is an entitlement, they don't earn money doing anything.

People on social security are usually too old to protest.

Exactly.
Labeling it an entitlement is just the government's way making you think they are "giving" you something. Some gullible people accept everything the government says, and dont bother to use basic thinking skills to discern the differences.
Here's a list of government entitlement programs:
Social Security (OASDI): Provides monthly benefits to retirees, surviving spouses, and individuals with disabilities.Medicare: Provides federally funded health insurance for individuals aged 65 and older, as well as certain younger people with disabilities.Unemployment Compensation: Offers temporary financial assistance to workers who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own.Federal Employee Retirement: Includes pensions and benefits for civil service and federal employees.Needs-Based & Welfare ProgramsThese non-contributory programs are means-tested, meaning individuals must fall below specific income and resource thresholds to qualify:Medicaid: Co-funded by federal and state governments, providing health coverage to low-income adults, children, pregnant women, and people with disabilities.Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP): Provides food-purchasing assistance for low-income individuals and families.Supplemental Security Income (SSI): Offers monthly cash assistance to elderly, blind, and disabled individuals who have little to no income.Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF): Provides temporary cash assistance and support services to low-income families with children.Additional Family & Healthcare SubsidiesChildren's Health Insurance Program (CHIP): Provides health coverage to children in families that earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but cannot afford private insurance.Veterans' Benefits: Provides guaranteed pensions, disability compensation, and healthcare for qualifying military veterans and their dependents.Housing Assistance: Subsidized housing options and vouchers (such as Section 8) that help low-income households afford safe rental housing.Child Care & Nutrition Subsidies: Includes the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and free/reduced school lunch programs.Explore your eligibility or learn more about these initiatives through the USAGov Benefits portal.Would you like to know how to apply for any of these specific benefits, or are you looking to check the eligibility criteria for a certain program?Entitlement programs | Politics and Government | Research StartersEntitlement programs in the United States are government initiatives designed to provide citizens with a guaranteed minimum level of economic welfare and securi...EBSCOSocial programs in the United States - WikipediaIn the United States, the federal and state social programs include cash assistance, health insurance, food assistance, housing subsidies, energy and utilities ...WikipediaWhat are US Government Entitlement Programs: Meaning and DefinitionFeb 4, 2026 — The funding comes from a range of sources: * Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, and some other programs are financed by general funds of the US Treasury. *USAFactsThe Role of Entitlement Programs in the U.S. Federal BudgetJul 10, 2024 — Understanding Entitlements. Social Security (OASDI): Provides monthly benefits
The only "benefits" SS provides are to Uncle Sam.
There are no benefits for the vast vast vast majority of lifelong contributors. None! Zip!
Think of it this way, if you walk into a financial advisor's office as a 22 yr old newly employed worker, and tell him you want to invest 12.4% of every paycheck into a retirement fund, would he put you, 100%, into 30-yr US Treasuries?
No?
Why not?
Because at retirement, 45yrs later, every $1 invested would have generated ~$3.60. Had the same money been invested in an S&P ETF with dividends renvested, that same $1 would be worth >$100.00. So the SS ""benefit"" cost the "beneficiary" about $96.40 for every $1 initially invested.
It's actually worse, BTW. SS ROI consistently underperforms 30-yr Treasuries!!
Some benefit!

Trillions a year going into that program should make even more trillions a year. Instead the government just loots the stash.

Yeah, that's pretty obvious.
All the posters in here referencing "ya will collect mo dan you payed in" failed remedial math.

"We owe it to those who will retire after the turn of the century to be given sufficient advance notice to make what alterations in retirement planning may be required. The longer we wait to make what are surely inevitable adjustments, the more difficult they will become. If we procrastinate too long, the adjustments could be truly wrenching. Our citizens deserve better"

FDR took the US off the gold standard in 1933 and instituted social security (backed by paper) in 1935.
Thats the deal. The problem has been unfixable for a long long time. Social security is nothing compared to the bigger problems that will eventually come from the theft that took place 100 years ago.

Careful...
Facts hurt feelings.
DJT oughta try it again.
He doesn't care about poll numbers and he isnt going to be re-elected.

"The Big Idea" was a bi partisan plan proposed in 2024, the problem was the two senators that proposed it were Tim Kaine and Bill Cassidy.
quote:
The Investment Strategy: The $1.5 trillion would be borrowed over several years and allowed to compound for 75 years. The returns would be used to offset the massive long-term unfunded liability of Social Security without altering current benefits.
To protect the fund from political interference or being raided by Congress, it would be overseen by an independent board with a strict fiduciary duty to maximize returns. It would also require annual, publicly available audits.

It comes down to this:
The only shot at any chance of reform is a Republican majority in both houses, with a Republican President.
And that isn't a guarantee, even then.
Unfortunately, by the time Gen X and Y figure this out, they'll be Boomer-aged and in the minority.
