Someone tried to take lava rocks from Haleakala. The gods finally had enough.

I have had serious time in Kihei, working there, so I was concerned about friends who live there. News said Kihei residents can return.

Here is an NBC News video.

In all seriousness Maui is awesome and I hate seeing this but just like in CA they don't seem to clear out underbrush
I've got 1st through 4th cousins living on Maui (and the 1st cousins pretty much have been there my entire 59 year life after my Aunt, their mother, bought property there in the 50's).

One of my 1st cousins went native and shacked up with a woman tribal leader and taught the tribe to grow coffee which is now the tribal source of income. Sounds to me like wildfire would probably be in that type area.

Well, at least I was able to see Lahaina this year before it burned up. Hopefully they improve the night life scene when they build it back.

it’s not the rain forest that’s burning

I'd say if it can burn every 5 years then it should burn regularly.

The other poster mentioned underbrush so I just assumed the fires were in the forested areas on the mountains.

I see know that its more on the leeward slopes toward the coasts

Fires were rare in Hawaii and on other tropical islands before humans arrived, and native ecosystems evolved without them.

How would anyone know that?

Maybe look at some of the resorts north of Kaanapali, like Kapalua? I know there is a Ritz up there at least, and lots of rental properties. I don't think those areas are being impacted at this time.

Very nice area.

there's a lot of that on the NW tip of the island around the airport, Kaanapali, and the southern half of the island, it can get very dry there, and trades that come whistling through there can really set up a bad scenario
