Wild African elephants have to be culled if they aren’t given enough habitat

Picture the Africa elephant’s traditional habitat as a dinner plate. Place a postage stamp on the plate and that is their habitat in 2026 (roughly). The rest of the dinner plate is farmland, cities, roads, etc.

Elephants are smart but they don’t understand carrying capacity. Because of this they keep making baby elephants despite the fact they have a small fraction of their traditional habitat to live on. Which means at some point the elephant population reaches a point where their habitat can be barren of food, and starvation ensues (for elephants and other animals there).

So there are actually (3) alternatives, despite my title:

- Remove farms and development and give elephants more habitat
- Cull elephants to keep their populations in check
- Let the elephants mostly starve to death

Side note: Culled elephants from trophy hunting are almost 100% consumed by locals, often with nothing left after 24 hours.

This is my vote. Since I like elephants and I don’t have a farm

I once saw a documentary that noted that elephants will eat the wood from the trunk of a tree if starvation hits. It is indigestible. In short, they die from constipation.

Even though it’s not shitty way to die, it does sound horrible.

This problem is the west and mainly the US has not allowed nature to take its course in Africa. If we would the populations would fall to a more balanced number. They don't have the know how to sustain the population they have.

Carrying capacity on a landscape and how animal populations need to be managed is an inconceivable idea to many here.

We should bring the Elephants to Louisiana and let them live in the swamps so that they can eat the vegetation there and kill the Swamp Hippos.

It has 1.5B people which is the 2nd highest after Asia. The population is also growing at a faster rate compared to most other continents. However, it’s middle of the pack in terms of population density

Well if you give the elephants more habitat, the population will expand to fill that up. Then what? Even more land? At some point you have to decide how much habitat do they need to maintain a healthy population. Someone more knowledgeable will have to determine that. As far as people goes, if it gets too crowded they go to other continents primarily North America and Europe.
