This subject came up on the M/TV board about some movie starring Johnny Knoxville called "Action Point", which spoofs a real amusement park in New Jersey called "Action Park"

Someone mentioned the Wikipedia article for it over there, and it does not disappoint. Here is a picture of one the most dangerous slides:

Anyway, go read it LINK

A couple of my favorites:

quote:

The sleds were a large factor in the injuries. A stick that was supposed to control speed led, in practice, to just two options on the infrequently maintained vehicles: extremely slow, and a speed described by one former employee as "death awaits".

quote:

Employees at the park used to like eating at a nearby snack bar with a good view of the attraction, since it was almost guaranteed that they could see some serious injuries, lost bikini tops, or both

quote:

Former employee Tom Fergus says the bottom of the pool was eventually painted white to make it easier to spot any bodies on the bottom

quote:

Super Go Karts: The karts were meant to be driven around a small loop track at a speed of about 20 mph (32 km/h) set by the governor devices on them. However, park employees knew how to circumvent the governors by wedging tennis balls into them, and they were known to do so for parkgoers. As a result, an otherwise standard small-engine car ride became a chance to play bumper cars at 50 mph (80 km/h), and many injuries resulted from head-on collisions.

Their wiki page has a list of people that died there. One was electrocuted because there was an exposed wire in one of their pools.

quote:

These were miniature open-cockpit race cars on a longer track. Extra money was charged to drive them, and they, too, could be adjusted for speed by knowledgeable park employees, with similarly harmful consequences to riders.[3]Fergus said that, after the park management briefly set up a microbrewerynearby, employees looking for after-hours fun would break into it, steal the beer, and then ride the cars on Route 94.[45]

This just sounds like fun

Had a friend who was injured there, we called him settlement. They cant describe how unbelieveably cold the water was (and deep). On the hottest summer days, with 100% humidity, the hot sun and the ice water made you celebrate survival and being alive that was the joy. to try to make it to the ladder when your body was suffering from hypothermia was an accomplishment.

I grew up in Jersey, went to Action Park a few times, and can attest to this. Wiped out on one of those sleds once. Fortunately all I did was shear some skin off my shoulder. My other injuries at the park we’re just minor cuts and bruises from this one big inner tube water slide they had....the bottom of the slide was jagged as hell, and any part of you that hung out the tube was bound to get nicked. Even as kids, it was well known how unsafe the park was.

But did they ever have turds float by in the water like at Thunderbird Beach?

I lived in the St Louis, MO area in the mid ‘60s as a kid.

Someone built one of these slides and the theory was climb up the stairs to the top and then to sit on the burlap sack they provided and slide down the fiberglass slide.

Once you got moving, if any part of your skin came in contact with the slide, it would give you the worst road rash of your life.

I know from first arm experience.

I doubt you could open this now for business.

The park's popularity went hand-in-hand with a reputation for poorly designed, unsafe rides; under-aged, under-trained, and often under-the-influence staff;[3] intoxicated, unprepared visitors; and a consequently poor safety record.

quote:

in the park's last year, it kept part of the ski area open despite being unable to obtain liability insurance

Since it was closer and slightly cheaper than Six Flags Great Adventure, Action Park attracted many visitors from urban enclaves of the New York metropolitan area. Many of them were often from lower-income neighborhoods where they had few, if any, opportunities to swim, much less learn how.

Black people around water is halarious.

Been there

Went back in the 90s, almost went off the alpine slide track.

Kids are so weak these days.
