tl;dr: Majority of roads are shitty, non standard, will never be upgraded.

quote:

"It can't find the lane markings!" Kerssemakers griped to Mayor Eric Garcetti, who was at the wheel. "You need to paint the bloody roads here!"

Shoddy infrastructure has become a roadblock to the development of self-driving cars, vexing engineers and adding time and cost. Poor markings and uneven signage on the 3 million miles of paved roads in the United States are forcing automakers to develop more sophisticated sensors and maps to compensate, industry executives say.

You know it's possible that the cars will get more advanced and be able to adapt to crappy roads, just like humans.

I am almost certain that it is against Alabama law to have nice, well painted lines on any paved road.

That's kinda the point genius. That will take time and money, and it's not the cars that are the problem.

Computers are pretty stupid when it comes to non standard stuff. It's why they can't read handwriting or understand speech. Dumb machines.

I was also kinda wondering how parking would work. Like, how would you program a car to park in certain driveways or whatever. I guess you could have a manual override but how would that transition occur? and wouldn't having a manual override available cause insurance companies pause, thusly negating some of the argued benefit of reducing insurance premiums?

I have no desire to own a car that can drive itself. If it gets to a point where I have no choice I will just rebuild an old beater. frick putting my life in some robots hands.

Yep. They've been trying to tell me for years that machines will replace cashiers like me. I'll believe that when I see it

I'd much prefer putting my life in some robot's hands than continuing to share the road with other humans, who spend more time looking down at their phone than focusing driving their 4 ton weapon.

ETA: Eliminate drunk drivers, distracted drivers, old fogies who haven't had their license taken away from them yet, and just people who generally cannot drive. I'll give up my freedom to manually drive to avoid of all of the above.

One of the many careers that is safeguarded from the robotic employment invasion. As a telephone operator, I feel pretty confident that people will want to hear a human voice to connect their calls.

This is one of many reasons why I don't realistically see FULLY automated cars being a reality any time soon. Here they are saying that the cars require painted lines on the road in order to function. Do you know how many roads don't have lines (and aren't supposed to)? For example, neighborhoods.

We would need a totally different infrastructure built for automated cars if this is the case and it would have to be perfectly maintained (will never happen).

Imagine some little bastards decide to paint over some striping or redirect the lane markings towards the closest tree.

I would love to be able to read, watch a movie, sleep or work while letting AI drive me places. So I see a huge benefit. It is fun to drive at times but I do see some benefits.
