I bet in 18 months the tech will have evolved enough to overcome this obstacle.

Tl;Dr.

They will drive themselves on major interstates and highways.
Similar to Minority Report with Tom Cruise. Remember how they worked there? All interstates and highways were automated, but city and rural roads you drive yourself.

In cities and rural areas you have to drive yourself.

But automating the US interstate system would immediately improve and change almost every aspect of life.

As a telephone operator, I feel pretty confident that people will want to hear a human voice to connect their calls.

They always come crawling back when they realize how dumb and lifeless the machines are. My grandfather's mail-in search engine service has admittedly taken a hit in recent years but they'll be back once this google fad dies off

I have no desire to own a car that can drive itself. If it gets to a point where I have no choice I will just rebuild an old beater. frick putting my life in some robots hands.

But you would rather put your life in a drunk driver, distracted diver, or somebody driving on pain pills hands?

I'm the opposite, it will be worth it to not have traffic jams anymore and drunk drivers. Automated cars will communicate with each other and do away with stop and go traffic or wrecks at 5:00 on a weekday that screw up traffic for hours.

I also look forward to chilling, drinking coffee, and reading while my car drives me to work. Or going out drinking with friends and knowing everybody will get home safe.

I don't see them overcoming the obstacle a winter storm would present. Unless they could somehow use the reflector sticks that mark the edge of the pavement.

They already do that. Truly autonomous is very different.

cars will get more advanced and be able to adapt to crappy roads

or companies like google and apple will pour tons of money and upgrade roads around the country in a record time, much faster than it takes the gov't to do it.
