I have two "dress" watches, both under $500 when bought. A Seiko I got from my "adopted" parents at LSU graduation 20 years ago, and a Tissot the ex wife got me. The Tissot pisses me off because I have to replace the battery in it so often, even with lithium, although I like it otherwise.
Eastern Europeans have a strange fascination with watches as status symbols. I got the battery replace in the Tissot in Poland once, and there was a line of goons getting their watches adjusted and pressure tested as if the potential Maxim model they were going to try to get with that night would see if their watch was sealed properly.

I don’t have a seiko yet but wouldn’t mind a grand seiko at some point.

That is better directed to Broke. Breitling is one of the few brands I have never owned. I have nothing against them and have been very close to buying a Navitimer on multiple occasions simply because it is one of "those" watches. At the end of the day, I suggest buying what you like and never get caught up to much in "value". A Toyota Camry or Corolla is probably the best value in all of the automotive world. However, if you don't like it what is the point. If there wasn't value in looks and style the world would be an incredibly boring place.
I bought a Breitling this week. It was one I wanted to check off the list.
I’ll probably do a Tudor next.
Agree with your statement on the world being a boring place.

This is why I buy Movado

Every time I’ve looked at one that piqued my interest, I’ve thought “I like the case, but I don’t like it enough to justify the price considering the pedestrian movement inside…”
Eh, not sure I’d call the B01/B04 in the Navitimer “pedestrian” with it being an in house movement w/ a column wheel and a vertical clutch. Unless of course you also consider the Daytona, Patek Nautilus and AP Royal Oak also “pedestrian” ….which all uses their own in house spin on the same technology.
In fact Rolex thought so highly of the Breitling movement it chose it to power the Tudor Black Bay Chrono.

don’t understand how watches haven’t gone away like the VHS player. It’s like paying 10,000$ for a telegraph machine.
Watches are a dandy man’s diamond ring. They follow the necktie in the race for dumbest male accessory bought only to impress other people.

I can buy 5 or 6 very well made vintage Hamiltons for the price of a modern Khaki. I probably have like 60 watches right now, and have spent about $4k on everything.
where are you buying these? just getting lucky at pawn shops or ebay?

But wears a smart watch AND a phone in his pocket

The Jazzmaster viewmatic or Gent Quartz.
Not sure on the Seiko, something of similar style to the jazz master.
Honestly, 50/50. I like the Hamilton field watches but for a more dressy watch I would just pick what I liked best. While I like the old Cocktail Time better the new CT range is quite nice and has a bit better dial IMO.
Returning to the OP note there is a good chance there is some Chinese content in a Hamilton and some non-Japanese content in the Seiko.

I don't know if they are bought only to impress other people, some people might but some people don't. I won't say I don't like a compliment on my watches but it is extraordinarily rare anyone ever mentions them. Watches just aren't a very good way to get "noticed".
For me, watches are a pretty insular hobby except when talking to other watch geeks, usually over the internet. I spend hours sitting in the chair below, tearing apart movements and putting them back together like a reverse jigsaw puzzle, and the only one aware of it is when my wife hears me cursing the watch gods at the top of my lungs. Anyone buying a watch to impress is usually tilting at windmills.

I got a free Apple Watch at work and gave it to my wife. I don’t like wearing jewelry.

Yeah, you’re probably right. Tons of people out paying thousands of dollars for something that is entirely superfluous in the modern world for the knowledge they own the artistic output of a dying craft. They’re status symbols 99/100 times.

You definitely have to be a bit of a nerd to "get it."
I find it absolutely fascinating that this little gizmo has nothing in it but springs and gears and latches and can be remotely close to accurate at keeping time. I like hearing it tika tika tika tika tika away in a quiet room.
Would I spend $8k on one? If I had the means to blow $8k on a play thing, sure. What's the difference in spending that on a watch, a rolling car chassis (that will end up costing A LOT), a fancy rifle, or any of the countless other things we buy for fun?
I can't tote an AI ASXR everywhere to oogle at how cool it is. My watch has been on my wrist very close to 24/7 for 10 years now, and I still think it's pretty cool.

Obtuse’s point is, if they’re status symbols, they are awful status symbols. It’s extremely rare anyone notices what kind of watch someone is wearing. And even if they do, unless it’s a Rolex, that person will likely have no idea what they are looking at. I could walk around a hundred thousand dollar watch on my wrist and absolutely no one would notice unless they were a watch geek. Further, I could walk around with a well made replica and absolutely no one would be able to tell the difference while it was on my wrist.
The guys buying the cheapest Rolex they can afford? Sure, that’s a status symbol. The guy walking around with an A. Lange & Söhne probably doesn’t give a shite what you think and would be genuinely shocked if you noticed.
