College football is played by 20-year old amateur athletes, 95% of whom will never play professionally.

Why do we let their actions consume our thoughts during football season?

We?

Their actions consume maybe a small fraction of a percent of my thoughts. Maybe you're just a little weak.

They represent an institution we support/attended.

We have something in common with them unlike professional athletes. This is the reason I don't really care about professional sports

You are asking questions the man doesn't want you asking.

The masses must be placated.

Interesting point.

Should you be able to pull for a team if you didn't go to school there?

I say no.

Lots of LSU fans complain like they invested something in the university. When, in fact, they did nothing except reap the rewards without ever having gone there.

Bottom line, if you didn't graduate from LSU, you shouldn't support/follow their athletics. Alumni only, please.

I think anybody can root for any team whether they went there or not (excluding bandwagon fans).

LSU was not my favorite college team as a kid but I ended up going to LSU and now I root for them no matter what. I still root for the first team unlesss they play LSU.

It's wrong for me to root for the original team I liked?

I wouldn't go that far but I don't understand people who are passionate fans of a school they did not attend.

LSU is equated with Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge is home. A lot of fans became indoctrinated when their parents took them to tiger stadium. The golden girls; Tiger Rag, the local college; listening to Jim Hawthorne or John ferguson . WJBO or WWL radio. Sid Crocker etc

Some of TAFs largest donors didn't go to school there. Should they not be able to donate?

So you'd rather watch AFL2 than SEC football because those guys are being paid? The college players spend more time and effort preparing for their games than those guys who were professional just because they got a paycheck.
