re: Why on Earth would parents choose to home school their children?

Well, it wasn't uncommon for most of western civilization. I see no problem with it. Most kids just waste time at school. If the parents are really committed to teaching their children, it's not just the kids running wild all day and learning frick all, I see it as a positive. If I ever have children, I'll probably do a hybrid form of homeschooling. Checking them out of school every couple of weeks to go on an educational outing, giving them extra work in literature, math and writing. Stuff like that.

Maybe because they see the brain washing going on at the schools today. Maybe the want their kids to grow up with an academic education and not being taught that everything is easy for them because they are privileged because of the color of their skin. That everything our fore fathers did was criminal. Don't get me started. But mainly they don't want their kids being taught that God does not exist.

My sister homeschools her kids. There is no doubt her kids are getting a better education. She is personally invested and works really hard at it.
Having said that, she's never come out and said it, but I think it's mostly to shelter her kids from evil. They are real religious nuts. They believe the earth is only 6000 years old, dinosaur bones are fake, that kind of thing.
Plus some of the people she is friends with through homeschooling are really weird and creepy. real off-the-grid types.

We (mostly wife) homeschooled our daughter until 6th grade. The wife owned her own yoga studio and had the time to do it. We did it because A: better education B: more family time
There are pros and cons. You definitely have to get them into activities with other kids to avoid having no social interaction.
Overall, it was good for us. But, like I said we put my daughter in public school in the 6th grade because it was time, and the wife wanted to get a more regular job.

Also let’s say you live in a terrible public school district and you can’t affodnprivate school, but you know you can homeschool. If done properly, and this is the key, it can be a great educational system.
People I know, this is the reasoning.
They don't want to pay the premium for a house in a good school district, so they buy a really nice house in a bad school district. Then when their kids get to school age, they realize exactly why that house was so cheap. They realize they can't afford private school, or the only nearby private school is far too religious, doesn't teach evolution, etc.

I don't think I would ever home school kids (if I have them) because I don't think I would be a great teacher but I would do it if the schools around me sucked and I didn't have 15 grand a year to drop on private school.

Public schools, on the whole, are just terribler and terribler by the minute, baw.
I completely understand the sentiment or desire to homeschool in the 21st Century.

Schools are the best place for kids to learn how to socialize. If they do rec sports, they won't know any of the other kids, and will be outcasts.
If parents are gonna home school, they need to employ professional teachers to teach their kids. Stupid parents don't make smart kids

Seems like it's usually the mom's without an education and career path that end up not doing daycare and do home-school.

The only reason I'd send them to school is for the socialization and opportunities to play sports.
But I feel like traditional structures are starting to give way to more flexible socialization opportunities. I believe in lots of cities, there are groups/associations where home-schooled children can get together for these kinds of things.
In Alabama and I'm sure in other states they require anyone who home schools register with what's called a cover school. Basically a place that will keep up with your school records and transcripts and the such. Depending on the cover school they offer sports teams, key club, drama club, and co-op classes which you can choose to be apart of if you want to.

the notion that homeschoolers miss out on social interaction is wrong
yes and no. again, I'm close to my sister and her homeschooled kids. Her and my BIL are seriously debating putting their boy in private school because they think he really would benefit from more social interaction. He's in soccer, baseball, etc but it's not the same. And he has a really outgoing personality. My niece is off-the-charts intelligent and needs to be homeschooled.
However, they freely admit that it's not uncommon to still be in their pajamas at 2 in the afternoon. I don't think that's positive. I think they need to get up and get dressed like the rest of the world.
