Public schools do fairly well when dealing with students around the average. But historically if you have a student that either has serious learning disabilities, or who is talented/gifted, then things don't work out as well.

Remember Edison was homeschooled after the public schools essentially labeled him a retard. Who was wrong then?

I was recently told by a student that she was leaving our school. I asked her why and simply said that her course schedule was too difficult. FWIW, her family has money and her course load was pretty stout. She is a nice kid and fairly intelligent. I suppose she simply knows her academic limitations. In her case, home school may be just what she needed.

So you have no trust in public schools the same as home schoolers? And, you wish to shelter your kids from the general public the same as home schoolers too?

Difference being, you pay others to do what home schoolers take upon themselves. The home schoolers make sure their kids are 100% taught their own values and social mores too.

Never said that. I feel the school my kids attend gives them a better education than what they could get at a public school, not that I don’t think they could excel at a public school.

1. over 82% of home schoolers graduate from College
2. they can take trips without missing school
3. no bullying, no worries about shootings
4. they are not left behind if they have reading problems
5. spend 10 minutes with my grand kids and you will be surprised
6. my 17 yo granddaughter is taking 12 hrs in Jr. College

How do you even measure that stat? It is a misleading statement. It's the same as the post earlier that said Home schoolers score higher than private school score higher than public school on standardized tests. Most home schoolers and most private schoolers never take a standardized test unless it is the ACT/SAT.

I don't have a source handy, but I just read the other day that 83% of families that homeschool cite religious reasons as their motivation. Hell, it's hard to even find homeschool materials that aren't put out by evangelical fundamentalists.

From personal observation, it can work well, especially at the elementary level, IF you have lots of time and resources. It's more problematic getting them through high school subjects and prepared for college.

And a backup plan is all important. Illness, divorce, job loss can turn your carefully crafted program to shite overnight.

There was once a secular homeschool group on the Northshore. It faded and the only group left AFAIK is a rather militant Catholic group. Nice folks, but if you get involved you'll get a healthy dose of Catholic dogma, and every social activity will revolve around the church.

To make sure their kids are not exposed to other races or religions. Keep their minds closed. Visit the prejudices of the parents on the kids.

If they are close in age I would say this helped in forcing them to be social. Crazy the differences between only children, and kids who grew up with close in age siblings.

There are tuition free online alternative schools for all grade levels that also have a college prep track. Louisiana has a excellent program, totally free and operated by the state dept of education, The graduates do extremely well in receiving college scholarships.
