I"m conflicted here. On the one hand I really can't tell if this is something you copy pasted off facebook because you thought it was funny. On the other, your dad getting cucked by some O&G mcmansion owner would explain a lot about your posting.

Those areas have always been poor.

Even making good money, people with poor decision making skills will blow it on frivolous stuff. They'll never build wealth.

I was too. The area really doesn't look that different from when coal was booming. Coal was a highly exploitative industry and the money mostly shifted away from the actual areas where the resources were. Coal jobs died as much from mechanization as from decreased demand. There was never a time of F250s and truck nutz just times when there were more jobs that sustained people at pretty much poverty levels. A lot of people make money in O&G only a very few have ever made money in coal.

The amount of attention she gets from this website cracks me up. She's an idiot, just leave her alone

I do not know why but I clicked thinking it was going to be an intelligent OP about the Louisiana economy.

Real Estate is a good place to invest cash.
I would do the same instead of leaving it in a checking account racking up that 0.01% interest.

Wtf?

These guys make as much money as the revered "auto workers" in union shops.

You could come out of high school making 60k just to start. There was nothing low paying before the crash.

When I think of things I was exposed to in my life that felt “wrong” or “very not normal” but I couldn’t put a finger on why two examples come to mind:

One of my dad’s work colleagues that lives in BR had a wife who couldn’t even speak English. They lived in a pretty remote part of BR with a helipad in their yard. She also had a young child that he didn’t interact with at all.

Another of my dad’s work colleagues had multiple “trophy houses”. One is 5,000 square feet filled with animals he has killed. Giraffes, Buffalo, lions... it puts Cabelas and Bass Pro to shame. Exotic hunting excursions in TX (where they hunt imported animals) are a regular part of life.

When I speak about moving away from the oil and natural gas industry, there are so many reasons why that I can’t even articulate it. The culture is hidden... unless you REALLY get in it... and it is gross.

I am 100% serious, I know people who work in the oil & gas industry (well, they refer to it as the petrochemical industry) in a more.. I guess "indirect" way. Most specifically, engineering firms in which most of their projects or with plants that are associated with the oil & gas industry.. Who have told me that when they think about their job, they feel like what they do really has no meaning whatsoever.

The only reason they continue doing it is because of the money (which IMO, when it comes to a job, is the most important thing. While it might make some people feel as if their job has no real impact on the world, they are still getting paid, which means they are paying taxes, they are providing for their family and spending money, which is essential to our economy.. But, I think I know what you mean.. The people who do gain the most in the industry seem to be a breed of their own.. And there is something "unethical" about them.

A lot of people are shitty fathers or non existent fathers. About half of Baton Rouge doesn’t know their fathers. One “bad” father who will provide his child with a fantastic life is no reason to move away from the main industry of the state. Neither is someone who hunts exotic animals. I lived next to a guy that did that when I was a kid. He owned a restaurant, unrelated to O&G
