wanted to avoid the potential traffic clusterfrick that would happen if the draw bridge ever had a malfunction and got stuck in the open position and all I-10 traffic had to be diverted all the way to Hwy 11 or 90 for any length of time.
Can’t be any different when some runs off into the trees to clear out the timber or when one side has to close for construction like LA did when they repaved the I10/59/12 exchange. That was a cluster.
Those times made me download the Waze App.

Not that tall.
We had to put the outriggers down while going underneath

Think how many people have died on the bridge due to its poor design? Think of the hundreds of thousands of human hours wasted in traffic due to tall-bridge caused wrecks.
The bridge was built to the standards of the time it was built. At that time people wouldn’t travel 70 on the interstate. You might be lucky if the speed limit was 55 and your car would go only go faster than 55 or 65. I can remember my family station wagon in the mid 80s with the 55 circled and the speedometer stoping at 85. It wasn’t a circle.
Speeding is a huge problem on the bridge. I travel it maybe once a week and sometimes will get run over by someone that is going nearly 80-90 MPH.

Check out the one in Brookport.
Just looked that one up on Google maps. No thank you. Looks like the entire length of the bridge is constructed out of that metal mesh material.
It's bad enough driving over that stuff when it's just a section of a draw bridge, can't imagine driving over that when it's the whole surface of what looks like a pretty long bridge. Especially in bad weather and/or at night.

My late Father worked on that bridge. It was built that tall and had a drawbridge in the center to open due to NASA floating rocket engines on barges from the Michoud Facility to Stennis for testing during the Saturn V program.

So, while we're talking about I-10, what's the story with the bridge set up over the Pascagoula River?
I seem to recall each span used to have metal grating over the river that's not there anymore, but the large rectangular metal "boxes" are still on the sides of each span at that location. What are those for?

A movable bridge, such as a "draw" bridge or swing span is much more expensive to build AND maintain over years, whether you actually operate it or not.

Which aspect of design do you think is poor that relates to traffic deaths that have occurred?
But, sure, let's take a sound bridge that is functioning fine and spend $70M-$80M (that could be used to replace other infrastructure that needs it) to replace it because a couple guys are scared of heights.

The bridge as it is today is unsafe and a better design should be considered. Is there a good reason for the bridge to be as high as it is still? A revolving bridge similar to the one at Highway 90 would save lives and lots of time, not to mention calm my nerves.

Just put on your big girl panties and drive. Sheesh. Cut back on the estrogen and soy sauce.

It just looks high because the ground in Louisiana is so low.
