Why is the I-10 bridge over Pearl River so high?

The I-10 bridge over the Pearl River is extremely steep and narrow. I do not like riding over it. That distaste gave birth to questioning. Why is the bridge so high? The Pearl River seems to be a limpid, nugatory vein of water without significant maritime traffic or a history to note other than as a state border. Yet a towering, intimidating, precipitous, and cheap concrete bridge spans it. I understand the federal government spends our tax dollars on space camps at a nearby center. Perhaps the bridge exists to ship large containers to that center?
If there is no good reason for the bridge to exist in its current form, I move to replace the bridge with something that is not so hair-raising.

That’s ok, pal. I, too, suffer from gephyrophobia. It is REAL, dammit!

Indeed it is and has always been so for me.
Perhaps my worst recurring nightmare is being forced at gunpoint to drive over the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan.

Planning for sea level rise baw. It’ll be about that high in 5 years

Everybody knows that a whole lot of vehicles have to fit onto the bottom of the river in that stretch, so they elevated the bridge to compensate.

I noticed you posted the same picture in my recent restaurant review. I do not understand the picture's relevance or meaning.

I think you answered your own question.
Stennis needs the clearance to get rockets they test in and out. I don’t know how much activity is still going on with our space program withering on the vine. I do recall that there was a major test a few months ago.
Also, nothing concrete now is cheap. Just widening and building a new Twin Spans was almost a billion dollar project. So that bridge is one of the hurdles why LA and Mississippi didn’t complete an effort to widen I10 to 6 lanes.

I hunt in southern Illinois and have to cross the Ohio at Shawneetown. Narrow and tall. Freaks me the hell out.

They fix up drill ships in Jackson MS, so all the bridges on the pearl have to be high.

So the answer to this is pretty interesting and I only stumbled across it after speaking with Humboldt Mandell, who worked on the original Mars planning group at NASA in the early 1960s. When this bridge was being built they needed to transport rockets from Stennis to Michoud, and the rocket they envisioned using for Mars was called the "Nova" rocket. This was envisioned to be a good deal wider than the Saturn V and thus the high clearance needed for this particular bridge.

Your entire act on this website is so bizarre

B_wins, great to see you my friend.
We last discussed Luke 21-26. Do you think we should start there or return to Genesis 1?
Draggin, that was a great read. Thank you for linking it.
Answer to original question: NASA had plans to go to Mars in the 1970s. The rocket they were designing would be too wide to fit through the bridge to get to their space camp. The new rocket would be shipped while it stood vertically. To get through the bridge, the bridge was designed with a draw bridge at its top to be opened from below, by the passing container ship.

I have all the others bookmarked and I read them frequently. Just start where you left off.
