Using a word like nugatory on tOT is worthless.

Or for a better turn of phrase, it is casting pearls before swine.

Go under that bridge and follow the river a few miles downstream. You'll soon come to the decrepit old US-90 bridge, which was built in 1934 and clears the Pearl River by 10' on average.

US-90 does has a swing-open drawbridge, though, and the way the I-10 bridge was built probably reflects the desire to avoid having a drawbridge on the interstate.

The level of overkill seen on I-10 does suggest a "brother-in-law" deal, particularly when compared to that creaky old US-90 bridge. How mission critical are we supposed to think the overall system is?

When originally built the I-10 bridge over the Pearl River had a steel mesh deck at the apex. It was a cluster frick for a long time during the construction to eliminate it.

Here's the real reason.....

Moving engine from Michoud to Stennis

I also hate it too. Those types of bridges while driving make me subconsciously steer closer to the edge when I’m thinking about not doing it. I don’t see the point in making it that high. Maybe the construction company that was funded by the government had a deal with some of the politicians and built it higher because it would cost more;therefore making more money for both parties

Uh... the desire to rarely have to use it, maybe.

OK... other people seem to think NASA might want to sneak a Saturn V down the Pearl River. Someone wants it to be navigable, and interstate drawbridges aren't very popular.

A draw bridge would have made much more sense. How many times in the last 50 years has NASA needed to open the draw bridge at Highway 90?

Think how many hundreds of millions in current dollars were wasted on the bridge as it exists today. Think how many people have died on the bridge due to its poor design? Think of the hundreds of thousands of human hours wasted in traffic due to tall-bridge caused wrecks.

A draw bridge with a half hour of inconvenience every decade to I-10 travelers would have been preferable.

I do like the idea of starting a low bridge political party and campaigning from New Orleans to Biloxi to make this happen.

Well, I said it kind of seems like a brother-in-law thing... on the other hand, how many brother-in-law jobs do you think a drawbridge would generate, ad infinitum?

People have to be trained to operate it, to maintain it... these people have to have a supervisor. The bridge has to be tested every so often. Post-9/11, you need some Cheney-Rumsfeld-type assclowns to make sure it's not a national security risk, etc.

When I was maybe 4-5 years old, my brother and I had a collection of ninja turtle action figures that fell off that bridge.

We went to the beach fairly often as kids but this trip I’ll never forget.

The old man got his hands on a luggage carrier that he decided to strap on our Mazda MPV which encased our entire collection. He didn’t check his connections. The carrier was lost during the ascent, all turtles scattered the overpass. The state trooper claimed he might have seen a Donatello intact. All others lost. Sad day, made for a shitty trip.

Stennis needs the clearance to get rockets they test in and out. I don’t know how much activity is still going on with our space program withering on the vine. I do recall that there was a major test a few months ago.

IDK how it compares to the glory days of the space race, but they are still pretty active.

A draw bridge brings its own set of problems. It has moving parts that need routine maintenance so it’ll open when needed....which isn’t cheap. And I’m sure they wanted to avoid the potential traffic clusterfrick that would happen if the draw bridge ever had a malfunction and got stuck in the open position and all I-10 traffic had to be diverted all the way to Hwy 11 or 90 for any length of time.

The I-10 bridge over the Pearl River is extremely steep and narrow. I do not like riding over it.
