St Gabriel should be in east Baton Rouge or ascension parish. I’m sure money had to do with it a long time ago being that is the only piece of land on this side of the river while iberville is on the other side.

Used to be easier to cross a river than it was to drive down a non existent I10.

Probably something to do with Parish control of the Ferry and the few plants that are or once were there.

There’s some clear vestiges in (likely) old LA laws and needs when it comes to Parish boundaries. The AP and IBV having east and west banks is one example. The other is EF having Miss River frontage.

Probably something to do with historic French/British/Spanish/German settlements from hundreds of years ago.

Jefferson Parish used to reach down as far southward as Grand Isle before coastal erosion began to kick in after the levees were built...

Jeff Parish is huge. People think of it as Metairie, but it includes a ton on both banks near nola and then south to include GI and Lafitte.

I'm not sure who or why the lines were drawn the way they were back then BUT water ways were the way they traveled so it was no big deal.

Of note: Donaldsonville should be St. James or Iberville instead of Ascension.

Not sure, but most people don’t realize Iberville is a parish that borders the bottom of East Baton Rouge parish.

St. James, St. John, and St. Charles all cross the river too - with plants on both sides...

Being from St. Gabriel, I always wondered about that myself. I’m sure it made things tricky when they decided to close North Iberville HS. Kids literally drive past 2 WBR high schools to get to school lol. If St. Gabriel was in a different parish, maybe they could have kept that school open?

The Louisiana Legislature created Iberia Parish in 1868. Surveyor made a large error while laying it’s dimensions out and it wasn’t readily discovered until after the fact.
