Maybe it has something to do with that area not being a safe place to daydrink??

Is it better when the Legislative session is going on or cooler weather or LSU home game weekends? Or is it a total shiteshow...I used to enjoy it down there, but I have to admit it was a while back. Very sorry to hear this.

Mayor Dumas tried in the 70s

Kip tried in the early 2010s

Maybe in about 20 years someone will try again

There are probably as many cities the general size of Baton Rouge in the country that have rather vibrant bustling downtown areas as there are that don't.
I’m guessing we have wildly different definitions of a vibrant and bustling downtown.

Most big city downtowns are dead after 7pm.

Ignore the boomer comments. Nothing about it is a shitshow. However, it has lost a lot of luster from 10 years ago. As previously stated, local politics started the decline, and it really hasn't been the same since covid. Even with more people living downtown and a number of new places opening over that time, the nightlife scene hasn't returned to what it was.

I'm surprised the casinos aren't more involved in trying to bring people down there.

It's embarrassing that downtown Baton Rouge and LSU don't have a better entertainment/bar district.

The best way to solve this would be to gentrify the area between LSU and downtown. It's long past due for this to happen.

Mobile and Columbia, S.C.'s downtowns blow BR out of the water and have similar demos. Lexington is another city the same size of BR, Columbia, SC, Mobile, etc. that has an amazing, thriving area at the city core.

With that said, most downtown areas of cities are dying off a slow death.

We were just in Portland Maine last week. We could not get a reservation in several of the nicer restaurants. The downtown area was jammed with tourists and activity. It was safe and clean-one example of a downtown area that is certainly not dying.

nobody wants to go there.

OP, why don't you open up a restaurant or bar and try to get that area going?

As long as residential keeps getting built and renting out, it’s only a matter of time. We don’t need some big shift; we just need to continue down the path we’re own. Business follows residential, not the reverse.

Was in downtown Baton Rouge a few years ago for my daughter's volleyball tourment.

We stayed at Capital Center Hilton; we got back to the hotel so late that they stopped serving food. So, I had to walk to Schlittz & Giggles for pizza. While waiting for the pizza, a motorcycle pulled right in front of a car at that intersection resulting in a slow speed crash... about all the excitement for that night.

The people around the restaurant did not look like the picture below.

ETA: anywhere is still better than Jackson MS downtown...

Just listing sort of similarly sized cities (yeah some bigger, some smaller) I’ve been to in the past 10 or so years:

Nashville
Knoxville
Chattanooga
Columbia, SC
Athens, GA
Louisville
Boulder
Asheville
Greenville,SC
New Orleans

All have what looked like relatively vibrant downtowns. That’s 10 without a second’s thought. I haven’t even traveled that much and I’m leaving out huge places like NY, Chicago, Seattle.

Cause all the state employees have to work in the office 5 days a week and go home right after since they're pissed

That photo was probably from 15 years ago. The scene has changed in the past 10 years. They were even having a street racing problem for a while.

Nah man, we need to elect more progressive leaders like Broom. We are so close.

PS - Proud to say Kip was one of the last Democrats I ever voted for.

Because:

1) Metro Council won't change open container rules

2) SWB was against any project or policy that didn't first and foremost benefit "the community"

3) BRPD was scared shirtless after Alton Sterling and didn't want to deal with racism claims for keeping the hood rats under control downtown

Make it safe and more people would go downtown. It’s that simple. But it’s also racist in the land of make believe so it doesn’t happen.

Kip tried and did pretty good. That’s because no one could claim it was racist to have a safe downtown when he did it. Kip didn’t like the ghetto culture at all.
