Why have people started saying "Holiday" instead of Vacation?

I've noticed this more and more, I thought it was a European thing but now it seems its everywhere..
Kinda like "I'm going to university" we always said: "I'm going to college"

I always say holiday since our family is still in the House of Lords.

Yeah I thought that was some gay shite they said in England, but for whatever reason people say it more in America...
When you say holiday.. I am thinking of Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, 4th of July.. Otherwise, when you take off to do something you want to do.. thats vacation..
But in reality, I don't really care if someone says it or not.. I am just saying how I think of it.
