Imagine what would happen to diabetics before 1908.

I believe there was a state run psychiatric hospital in Greenwell Springs and in Mandeville but I think both of them were shut down ?

Sorry to hear you’re goi g through that. I suffer greatly from depression. Been thinking of ending it for a few weeks now and it’s not a comfortable place to be

Being stretched out. Long time ago, all you had to worry about was eating and surviving. Today on the other hand, we have credit card bills, house note, health insurance, car note, car insurance, cell phone bill, hunting lease, fishing boat, travel ball, competition dancing, electric bill, gas, side by side note, Amazon, cold beer, fast food, Mexican food $75/family of five, do I need to go on?

Back then they prob mainly had type 1 diabetics and they died at a young age. If there were any type 2’s, they died at a younger age then there peers as well.

Social media allows people to pretend their life is awesome and others see it thinking everyone else’s life is greater than their own.

Back in the day people were closer to their neighbors. People were more fit. People socialized in person not online. Life itself was simpler but tougher as far as comforts so people focused more on what’s important. People were more religious back then.

More sedentary lifestyle, common comforts are easily attainable, social media, lack of real socialization, lack of community and religion, people are less fit or healthy all equals poorer mental health.

A lot of people could simply exercise and lose weight and change nothing else and instantly have better attitudes and mental health

The whole covid thing destroyed people. I honestly haven’t been the same since. Even though I didn’t buy into any of that shite, it just affected me. Everything got more difficult in my job, people have become more distant. Life just isn’t the same and it’s definitely affected my mood

Two things immediately come to mind.

1.) Life have gotten too easy. People don't experience any struggle. Good times breed weak people.

2.) Social media. People have spent the last 20 years being inundated with the image that other people want to project of themselves. They then think their lives suck because they aren't as happy or successful as the image others are projecting.

It’s because of the obscene deviation of the norm, the way we have lived for hundreds of thousands of years. We traded interdependence and purpose for radical individualism and consumerism. We did not have these existential questions that caused us grief. We woke up and knew our purpose to provide for our families, and we did this together with our families, it was not work at all, it was a life. Now we are isolated, told to be productive every minute of the day be unique, and consume.

I think diet has a big part to play. A lot of the chemicals and processed food we eat affects a lot more than just body composition. That along with our reliance on technology is the major differences between generations.

It's always existed, but just wasn't talked about nearly as much in the past.

By the way, I am talking real mental illness, not this made-up "I need my safe space" crap. Those people aren't mentally ill, they're just weak.

People haven't changed. Society and perception has. "Mental health" issues have always existed. It's just that 30, 40, 50+ years ago very few were "open" with those issues. You were having struggles? So what! Everybody does. Get over it and quit whining. That was the general attitude.

There is less of a stigma today for those with mental health issues. That's a good thing because it allow those truly with mental health issues the comfort to seek help without fear of being "punished" for it.

But that openness has also created a group of who endeavor to be "victims" and absolve themselves of personal accountability for their struggles by attributing their problems to "mental health issues".

The number of people (proportionally) who truly have mental health issues is probably the same as it was decades ago. It just that they were likely under-diagnosed then, whereas they are over-diagnosed today.
All of this. And I'd like to add that because of people abusing the system so to speak, that the legitimate cases are passed off as people being ridiculous. When the reality is that some people really do have mental health issues that are real and need to be treated.

Now one thing that boggles my brain is the mental illness of waking up one day and identifying or pretending to be a different gender. Used to be, those people were considered nuts. In today's woke world those people are applauded and called brave.
